The Sutton Trusts' Opportunity Index is a brilliant piece of research, laying bare the inequalities in social mobility across constituencies in England.
But opportunity shouldn't be a postcode lottery.
Right now, just 7% of pupils from the North East receiving Free School Meals make it into the top 20% of earners, compared to 18% in London, with East Ham topping the rankings for opportunity.
The big question: what can you do to change this?
One option is to volunteer as a school governor where it's needed most. Governors help shape school priorities, hold leaders to account, and ensure every pupil — no matter their background — has an equal chance at success.
This (Thursday, 12th June at 12pm), we’re hosting a short webinar to explore how you can drive progress as a school governor.

Our new Teaching Building is open 24/7 and packed with creativity and innovation. From robotics labs and 3D printing to immersive VR and digital design studios.
🔧 The Workshop Building (due to open fully in the 2025/26 academic year) will feature industry-level facilities and become the new home of Oxford Brookes Racing 🏎️
Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair F**t and Chancellor Paterson Joseph cut the ceremonial ribbon earlier today and welcomed guests to explore these fantastic new spaces.
Built in partnership with Willmott Dixon Construction and ADP Architecture, these buildings are here for everyone – students, staff, partners, and our wider community.

🥈 Oxford Brookes alumnus and Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist Dan Bigham returned to campus earlier this week for The Inside Track, our annual employability event for Sport & Coaching Sciences students.
Dan shared his journey from student to elite athlete and engineer and gave an inspiring talk on ‘reverse engineering mindset’ - strategically mapping career goals and working backwards to achieve them.
Speaking at the event, Dan said 💬 “Your career isn’t something that happens to you - it’s something that you design. To engineer your own success, say yes to uncomfortable opportunities, develop skills beyond your core discipline, actively seek feedback, and build your network strategically. Enjoy the process!”
Thank you to Dan and all the industry professionals who joined us to support our students! 🙌
