Life is like a box of chocolates 🍫 you never know what you’ll get 😊

I didn’t have any expectations when preparing for the conference in Dubai 🇦🇪

Over 250 speakers 🎙️about 10 workshops happening at the same time 🕰️ and what you get is an engaged audience with all seats taken 😱

Couldn’t predict a better outcome for Tesol Arabia 🇦🇪 hopefully, workshop participants feel more confident in teaching academic writing skills ✍️

Thank you Melanie Gobert and TESOL Arabia

Don’t make this mistake!

Many IELTS Candidates fall into the same trap. I call it a trap of 'easiness'.

What is it?

Many IELTS questions are easy to answer. But, it's ONLY a trap!

Why?

Because many IELTS Candidates will give easy, meaning simple, answers.

For example, how would you answer this question?
'What's your hobby?'

IELTS Band 5.0. My hobby is cycling.

IELTS Band 6.0 I like cycling.

IELTS Band 7.0 I do like cycling.

IELTS Band 8.0 What I love doing is cycling.

Want to score IELTS Band 7.0 or 8.0 for speaking? Start using advanced grammar structures even if you're giving answers to easy questions.

Many IELTS and University students struggle with maintaining impersonal style of writing ✍️

One of the most important aspects of writing academically is grammar. If you want to sound academic, formal and unbiased, use the following:

✅ impersonal it, e.g. It is clear / evident/ obvious (if you want to give an opinion)
✅ passive voice in order to avoid using ‘you’
✅ relative clauses
✅ participle clauses

If you want to know how to use them in your writing, just DM me and I’m happy to help 😊

This is the look I would get from many of my students 😂

Why?

Because one of the most common comments students get for their writing is that they cannot use personal pronouns. And that is correct ❗

Academic writing is formal, unbiased, and objective. We engage in academic research because we want to answer a research question, evaluate sources, analyse evidence, and come up with original conclusions.

However, in academic writing, there is also room for reflective writing. The idea behind reflective thinking and writing is that we can gain insights into subconscious assumptions that we hold and that can hinder our growth.

Because it is reflective, it has to be subjective, but there is something that you can never forget.

Even though reflective writing allows you to use personal pronouns, it is still part of academic writing. As a result, the register of your writing remains formal.

What is the most difficult part of reflective writing for you? Do you ever engage in this sort of writing?

Feeling stuck at IELTS Band 5.0?

You don't have to! One of my students' writing scores was 5.0. When she showed me her writing, it lacked a clear structure or enough vocabulary to answer an IELTS question. After a month of hard work, she got 6.5 in writing! Amazing, isn't it 🤩?!

How did we get there? I often start my IELTS writing classes with an understanding of the public descriptors. What are they?

✅ task achievement/response

✅ coherence and cohesion

✅ lexical resource

✅ grammatical range and accuracy

By understanding what they are and how different they are for each band, you can gain more clarity and become more focused, and therefore, score a higher IELTS band.

Sounds good? Feel free to contact me for more targeted advice.

BREAKING NEWS‼️

Are you preparing to take the IELTS❓You need to know this‼️

According to the official source, IELTS Official in partnership with British Council and Cambridge Assessment Centre, 'test takers of the world’s most popular high-stakes English language test, IELTS, will soon have access to a new feature to help them boost the score they need to achieve their global learning and career goals.
Initially launching on a small scale in limited cities, IELTS One Skill Retake will enable test takers to redo one of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if they did not achieve the score they aimed for the first time around.

“IELTS One Skill Retake improves fairness by providing an opportunity to retake a single skill, if the test-taker feels their original performance was not representative of their language ability.”

What do you think 🤔? Is it a good change or not ❓Let me know in the comments👇

What a great New Year's present I received today?!

A student of mine got her IELTS results today and you wouldn't believe it! Overall, she got 7.5, which proves how good she is but there is a bit of credit I'd like to claim here 🙂

When she contacted me three weeks before Christmas her writing was at Band 5.0. Three weeks later after taking an intensive IELTS prep course with me, she was able to score 6.5!

That's incredible! Of course, she'll get a place at her dream university. That goes without saying!

If you want to see such opportunities in your life, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm happy to help :)
