3 easy tips for a research proposal that will impress you future potential supervisors 👇

✅ what > align your research topic with your future potential supervisors ( they can’t really help you if your topic is out of their scope)

✅ why > what do is the purpose of your research? In other words, how are you going to demonstrate the originality and value of your research?

✅ how > are you going to use primary or secondary data? Qualitative or quantitative methods or mixed-method approach?

Life is like a box of chocolates 🍫 you never know what you’ll get 😊

I didn’t have any expectations when preparing for the conference in Dubai 🇦🇪

Over 250 speakers 🎙️about 10 workshops happening at the same time 🕰️ and what you get is an engaged audience with all seats taken 😱

Couldn’t predict a better outcome for Tesol Arabia 🇦🇪 hopefully, workshop participants feel more confident in teaching academic writing skills ✍️

Thank you Melanie Gobert and TESOL Arabia

Don’t make this mistake!

Many IELTS Candidates fall into the same trap. I call it a trap of 'easiness'.

What is it?

Many IELTS questions are easy to answer. But, it's ONLY a trap!

Why?

Because many IELTS Candidates will give easy, meaning simple, answers.

For example, how would you answer this question?
'What's your hobby?'

IELTS Band 5.0. My hobby is cycling.

IELTS Band 6.0 I like cycling.

IELTS Band 7.0 I do like cycling.

IELTS Band 8.0 What I love doing is cycling.

Want to score IELTS Band 7.0 or 8.0 for speaking? Start using advanced grammar structures even if you're giving answers to easy questions.

Many IELTS and University students struggle with maintaining impersonal style of writing ✍️

One of the most important aspects of writing academically is grammar. If you want to sound academic, formal and unbiased, use the following:

✅ impersonal it, e.g. It is clear / evident/ obvious (if you want to give an opinion)
✅ passive voice in order to avoid using ‘you’
✅ relative clauses
✅ participle clauses

If you want to know how to use them in your writing, just DM me and I’m happy to help 😊

This is the look I would get from many of my students 😂

Why?

Because one of the most common comments students get for their writing is that they cannot use personal pronouns. And that is correct ❗

Academic writing is formal, unbiased, and objective. We engage in academic research because we want to answer a research question, evaluate sources, analyse evidence, and come up with original conclusions.

However, in academic writing, there is also room for reflective writing. The idea behind reflective thinking and writing is that we can gain insights into subconscious assumptions that we hold and that can hinder our growth.

Because it is reflective, it has to be subjective, but there is something that you can never forget.

Even though reflective writing allows you to use personal pronouns, it is still part of academic writing. As a result, the register of your writing remains formal.

What is the most difficult part of reflective writing for you? Do you ever engage in this sort of writing?
