Pre-School Room

We have been exploring the wonderful story ‘The Colour Monster’ and discovering that all of our feelings are welcome. 💛💙❤️💚🖤

Through stories, Colour Monster puppets, emotion spoons and a variety of creative art materials, the children have been expressing their emotions in their own unique way. Rather than focusing on the finished artwork, we celebrate the joy of exploring colour, texture and different media as a way to communicate thoughts and feelings - we talk a lot about process and not product and celebrating all child’s creations equally.

As we revisit the stories, the children are becoming increasingly confident in recognising, naming and talking about their emotions. They have enjoyed sharing how different situations can make them feel happy, calm, sad, angry, worried or excited, helping to deepen their understanding that all of our emotions are valid and that it's okay to express how we feel.

Through stories, conversations and creative experiences, we are supporting the children to build emotional vocabulary, empathy, confidence and resilience valuable skills that will support them throughout their lives.

It has been wonderful to watch their confidence grow as they learn to understand not only their own feelings, but the feelings of those around them. 🌈🎨💙

26th November….

Something magical written by Jodie in the Pre-School Room.

Sometimes the most wonderful learning journeys begin with the simplest conversations, and this week was a perfect example. It all started when one of our little explorers proudly shared that he wanted to bring his dog in to show his friends. His excitement was contagious. After talking about his idea to clear all the toys from the garden to make space for his pet, we reached a lovely compromise: he could bring in a picture of his dog for everyone to see.

That moment of curiosity opened the door to a whole world of imagination. Soon the children were deep in conversation about pets the ones they have, the ones they dream of, and the ones they’ve only seen in stories. Some of our children don’t have pets at home, which made the discussions even more creative and full of “what if?” thinking.

To build on their excitement, we shared the story The Great Pet Sale by Nick Inkpen, and the room buzzed with ideas. Before long, our week transformed into an inspiring, child-led project filled with imagination and learning. The children imagined dream pets, discussed how to care for them, explored early maths by making their own coins and prices, designed and crafted their own animals, and helped transform our room into The Great Pet Sale through role play and creative displays. They used real counting resources, shared ideas, negotiated roles and supported one another beautifully.

What began as one child wanting to share something special grew into a whole week of curiosity-driven learning, storytelling, problem-solving and joyful collaboration. A simple photograph became a world of pets, prices, pictures and endless possibilities all led by the children themselves.

Firstly we would like to say a massive thank Jenny and her wonderful team at Fotheringhay Christmas Trees!!! 🎄🎄🎄

Today we enjoyed the most magical festive adventure as we visited the Christmas Tree Farm, filling the air with excitement, curiosity and Christmas cheer. To begin our day, we snuggled together to share the wonderful story The Christmas Pine by Julia Donaldson, which set the perfect festive tone and sparked lots of thoughtful discussion.

With the story fresh in our minds, we ventured out into the twinkling rows of Christmas trees to choose our very own nursery tree. As we explored, the children carefully touched the branches, describing some trees as prickly and others as soft, using their senses to investigate the world around them. Thoughtful conversations flowed as some children questioned whether cutting trees down was the right thing to do. This led to a lovely discussion about sustainability and how the farm plants new Christmas trees every year to replace the ones that are cut down, helping us to care for our environment.

The children were asked what seed Christmas trees grow from, and one child proudly recalled from our story that they grow from pine cones, a wonderful example of learning carried forward through storytelling.

Once our beautiful tree had been chosen, we headed inside to continue our festive exploration. The children were captivated by the sparkling Christmas decorations, joyfully chatting about the colours and designs, and bursting into smiles when they discovered singing reindeer that filled the room with laughter and Christmas songs.

We ended our magical visit with some energetic play on the tractors, adding even more excitement to a truly unforgettable day. This trip was filled with rich conversation, sensory exploration, environmental awareness and festive joy a perfect Christmas experience that the children will treasure.
