On our BSc Midwifery course, students are taught that being a great midwife is not just about clinical skills, but empathy, heart, and standing by families during their toughest moments.
As part of commitment to introducing diverse perspectives in healthcare, the school’s recent first-year midwifery cohort attended a special guest session, featuring the charity 4Louis, founded by a family who channelled their own heartbreak into helping others.
4Louis works tirelessly to ensure no one has to walk the dark path of child loss alone; providing comfort, memory boxes and vital support. Bob (Louis’ grandfather) brought the charity's mission directly to our Midwifery students, sharing his family's personal story of loss and hope. His powerful words captivated and inspired students, Sarah Brooks and Sarah Cope to action. Last month, they conquered a charity skydive, jumping 15,000ft, to raise vital funds for 4Louis. To continue their support, they’re also both planning a special trip to the charity’s headquarters to help personally pack memory boxes for families in need.
“We are so incredibly proud of what Sarah and Sarah have chosen to do. Their selfless act symbolises their courage, leadership and passion – all of which play a crucial role in the support of bereaved families within maternity care services. We congratulate them for their fundraising efforts and for being excellent ambassadors of 4louis and Edge Hill University,” says Lorna Gerrish, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery.
Their actions are a wonderful example of how learning can extend beyond the classroom – and how compassion can become meaningful action.
Edge Hill are proud to be SANDS Champions of Baby Loss Awareness Week, helping to break the stigma, and support those who have experienced the loss of a baby to know where to find support.
