As-Salam.
I hope this message finds you in good health.
I know many parents are worried about their childrenās education and so I have made the decision to start ONLY ENGLISH tuition from next weekend, for groups no bigger than two. The classes will be arranged in such a way that social distancing is ensured.
Due to the pandemic, we will not be operating at full capacity at In-Tuition. This is to reduce the risk of transmission. I will inform you when we start to do Maths and Science classes.
If you are interested, you will need to let me know as soon as possible as places are extremely limited.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Wsalam.

Salam.
I hope this message finds you in good health.
As you have already heard, SATs and GCSEs this year have been cancelled due to the outbreak of Coronavirus. This has caused a huge deal of uncertainty amongst young people. As a Director in a secondary school in Rochdale, it has been the hardest week of my entire career to see young people crippled with fear: of exam results, of the future, of the unknown.
As per the government guidelines, I have made the decision to close In-Tuition for the rest of this academic year. I am sorry that the year 6, year 10 and year 11 pupils could not sit their exams this year to demonstrate the fantastic potential they show me every weekend at tuition. Iām sorry that their experiences have been cut short. Iām sorry I wonāt be able to hold their hand as they navigate through this very difficult moment.
I am sure you have plenty of questions. Please read this as it contains key information about exams and grades: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/further-details-on-exams-and-grades-announced
The following support is what I will provide for you during this situation:
- Availability: contact me if you have any further questions and I will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.
- Evidence: if you require tuition exercise books to hand in to schools, please let me know and I will have this ready for you to collect.
- Resources: if you would like work for your pupils whilst their school is shut, please let me know.
I will be messaging you individually to let you know of any outstanding payments or refunds.
Finally, please pass on my well-wishes to your child/children. They have all been an absolute pleasure to teach. Working five days a week in a school and then doing tuition on the weekend has been extremely tiresome but worth it to see the progress that the pupils have made. It has been an honour to have been a part of your childās educational journey. I hope they have found In-tuition helpful.
I will be praying for their success.
Stay safe!

*Mental Health Awareness*
My Literature tuition group, consisting of four year 10 boys, were questioning why there was such a big push on Mental Health in schools recently. I was aghast at their thoughts regarding this so I changed the direction of my poetry lesson to address this.
I asked the four boys to talk about some of the issues that they have experienced or are still going through. Boys being boys, they were reluctant to divulge too much information on any matters of the mind. I expected this reaction from them - the machismo and āhard guyā facade that we see all too much in young teenage boys.
Once ājudgementā was told to exit the room and the boys were coaxed to share their ātruthsā, the walls came crashing down. In that moment, a surge of honesty infiltrated the air and their minds (and hearts) were wide open.
I was overjoyed to hear so many deep-rooted concerns come flooding to the fore. I obviously wasnāt relishing in their pain, but relieved that these elusive worries were out in the open, to see the time of day for the first time, for someone to listen - maybe even a cry for help.
Who knew these boys were so conscious about their appearance due to the toxic social media pressures that permeate their everyday life? Who knew these students were crippled with worry about exams and that dreaded results envelope? Who knew these young men were so anxious about the future? Will they be successful? Will they make their parents proud?
In order to capitalise on these young boysā musings, I asked them to write down their concerns (I am an English teacher, after all) in the form of a sonnet - like a love letter to themselves.
It was a challenging task. Not because they didnāt know how to write a poem or how a sonnet is structured (believe me when I say that weāve gone over this umpteen times) but because the content of the poem was so real and so visceral; it meant the young men had to be vulnerable.
Sometimes we all need to remember that it really is okay not to be okay. Young people are so susceptible to anxieties and pressures from every direction. Letās remember to take a step back and just listen to matters of the mind, of oneās self and others around them.
Please read one of the poems that was produced as a result of Saturdayās sessions. It is about a young man who doesnāt fear enclosed spaces or heights or even death. He fears examinations. The poem is called Tsunami.
