💪 Building confidence, one step at a time. Stepping up in front of a classroom takes courage.

This week, one of our year 7 students took on the role of teacher, guiding their peers through Pythagoras' theorem and explaining how to find the hypotenuse.

Activities like this are designed to do far more than teach maths. By giving our young people the space to lead, we help them discover their own voice, take ownership of their learning and build the self-belief needed to navigate new challenges.

Following the practical demonstration, the group used computers to deepen their understanding through independent research. Combining peer leadership with self-directed learning allows our young people to develop practical skills, critical thinking and independence.

Five members of staff at an Oldham specialist school have qualified or started professional training this year as the school encourages apprenticeships as an alternative route into education careers.

Chances Mentoring, an independent specialist school in Chadderton, provides primary and secondary education for pupils across Greater Manchester whose needs are not being met in mainstream settings.

🏫 A school doing things differently to support young people

Chances Mentoring is a registered setting providing structured, supportive education for young people who cannot currently thrive in mainstream school.

We create small, focused classes supported by experienced teaching and support staff who understand the needs of pupils who struggle in mainstream settings.

‼️ In March this year, Ofsted inspected our school and claimed: "Teachers help to fill gaps in pupils’ understanding that have arisen due to previously low attendance in other settings. There is a clear focus on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need for their next steps in their education."

Our approach combines clear routines, strong relationships and purposeful activities that help young people reset, settle and make meaningful progress.

We are expanding our team at Chances Mentoring and looking for passionate individuals to support young people. Following our Ofsted report in March 2026, where all inspections standards were fully met, we are proud to continue building on our high-quality education and care provision.

👀 We are hiring for a Learning Mentor and a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA).

Both positions play a crucial role in delivering tailored educational support, building confidence and helping young people re-engage with their learning environment.

🎓 How we’re championing apprenticeship routes into teaching at Chances Mentoring

We are thrilled to celebrate five of our incredible staff members who have either qualified or begun professional training this year.

As an independent specialist school we provide primary and secondary education for pupils across Greater Manchester whose needs aren’t being met in mainstream settings.

To give our young people the best possible support, we are prioritising “growing our own” talent through as an alternative to traditional university routes.
