This may just look like a normal tower, but there’s actually lots of learning happening here!

One of the things I love about tutoring little ones is that learning doesn’t always look like sitting at a table with a worksheet. Play is learning too and sometimes it’s the best way to keep a child engaged while working on the skills they need!

This is something I’ve been doing with one of my 5-year-old learners and the blocks are a good way of working on his fine motor skills. Picking them up, turning them, connecting them and carefully putting them all together help build up hand muscles and co-ordination.
Whilst we’re building, we can also practise counting, colours, following instructions, problem solving and language without it feeling like a lesson.

And then, of course, there’s the concentration needed to build a tower this tall and I think he did a pretty good job with this one!

Yesterday’s work all about angles!
We focused on right angles, found some around the room and then had a go at sorting them into the correct columns.

After that we practised using a protractor and measuring acute and obtuse angles. Brilliant work!

Learning through play! 🌟

In yesterday’s session we explored the different sounds by saying them, tracing them and then writing them in rice.

Sensory activities are a fantastic way to support phonics and handwriting skills while making learning fun.

One thing I always say to parents is that reading at home doesn’t have to be perfect 📚

Even just 10 minutes a night can make such a difference over time. Little bits regularly really do add up and help build confidence, fluency and a love of reading.

If your child finds reading difficult or gets anxious about it, one thing I often suggest is echo reading. This is where you read a sentence first and then your child reads the same sentence back to you. It takes some of the pressure away and helps them hear how the sentence should sound before having a go themselves.

You don’t need to do it for the whole book either, just a page or two can help.

Reading at home should feel relaxed and encouraging, not stressful ❤️

Also, Jinx has decided she’s now fully involved in tutoring sessions and apparently supervises all reading practice 🐈‍⬛

Tonight’s session was all about contractions ✏️📚

We spent time learning what contractions are, where apostrophes go and practising turning two words into one (he’ll, didn’t, can’t etc.)

We also did a little bit of spelling and handwriting practice too 😊

It’s so nice watching things start to click and seeing confidence grow as the session goes on 💛

✨ Did you know?

Children remember spellings better when they practise for 5–10 minutes daily rather than one long session before a test.

Try:
✔ Write it
✔ Say it
✔ Cover it
✔ Write it again

Short, regular practice helps move spelling into long-term memory 🧠
