I’ve learned a lot from this experiment.
1. For people with disordered eating who I serve, there is a difference between pausing the consumption of food for medical reasons and having an unhealthy relationship with food. If I’ve offended you, I’m sorry. That’s not my intention.
My intention is to speak to people who’ve had an estrogen-based tumour.
My oncologist informed me that fat cells produce estrogen. As a survivor amid perimenopause, where one’s estrogen spikes and valleys, carrying extra fat cells is dangerous and can lead to recurrence.
I stayed quiet about my experience with cancer because when doctors gave me clearance, I never wanted to hear the word again. It’s been four years, and I am ready to share.
2. A dear friend who is a doctor of internal medicine and someone whom I respect, cautioned me. She explained that there’s been a lot of research done on men that shows that fasting has many positive effects. Until recently, very little research has included women. New research shows that fasting is actually bad for women. I will do more research before I try it again.
3. Someone asked if it matters at what time in your cycle you do this. Great question. I do not know. If anyone has any information on this, please place it in the comments. And perhaps all women should think about number two on this list and dig a little deeper into the effects of this practice on women.
4. Fasting has been part of the yoga tradition for millennia. Ayurveda, the medical branch of yoga, often uses it. For a deeper spiritual experience, cleansing the body is also a common practice in many spiritual traditions. This cross-cultural practice is important to note, as it spans the globe.
5. As someone who tries to live somatically in this world, I take instruction from my body. We are all different. My body feels great. I’ve been sleeping well; my mind is clear and my body feels healthy and bright.
6. Thank you to everyone who feels inspired and sent notes of encouragement 🙏🏼
