🌟Thoughtful Tuesday🌟

We’re thinking about bringing back some old routines for you to dance along to in class and we’d love your input. If you could revisit any past Xpress-Yourself dance routines, which ones would you choose? It’s fine if you only remember the song but not the dance style or vice versa, as any details you can share will help us plan our dance content over the next few months and beyond. Please share your ideas in the comments below! 💃✨

🌡️ Did you know?

Extreme heat can make some medications less effective or even unsafe if they're not stored properly.
As temperatures rise, it's important to check the storage instructions for your medications and speak to your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you're unsure.

A helpful reminder from our friends at LUPE Training — staying safe in hot weather isn't just about keeping ourselves cool; it's also about making sure our medicines are protected.

5 medications that could increase heat-related risks🌡

We all know the basics during a heatwave 👉 stay hydrated, take breaks, and check on the young and older people in your care.

But here's something you might not know...Certain medications can make people more vulnerable to extreme heat by affecting how the body regulates temperature, recognises thirst, or maintains fluid balance.

Some medications to be aware of include:

💊 Antidepressants: Can make it harder for the body to cool down and increase the risk of overheating

💊 Antipsychotics: May reduce sweating and make it more difficult to recognise thirst or overheating

💊 Insulin: Heat can affect blood sugar levels and may impact how insulin works

💊 ADHD stimulant medications: Can raise body temperature, reduce appetite and thirst cues, and mask signs of exhaustion.

💊 Some heart and blood pressure medications (including beta-blockers and diuretics): Can increase the risk of dehydration and affect the body's ability to respond to heat.

As temperatures rise, ask yourself:

• Who in my care may be more vulnerable this week?
• Who might need extra reminders or support to stay hydrated?
• Who may not recognise the early signs of overheating?

And don't forget yourselves. In care and early years settings, you're constantly on your feet looking after others. Make sure everyone on the team is drinking regularly, taking breaks, and checking in on one another too.

A little extra awareness and preparation can go a long way 👏

Enjoy this reel of our fabulous pink ladies at the Forward Carers event at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

We’ve also been keeping busy, running a dance workshop for carers at Headway Birmingham & Solihull and Barefoot Yoga. On top of that, we had a stall at the Chinese Community Centre - Birmingham. What a whirlwind of a few days, but oh so enjoyable!

🌟Saturday Spotlight🌟

➡Every Saturday, we share a different blog post from our website, focussing on a specific style of dance. This Saturday, we are shining our ballroom spotlight on the rhythmic Rumba!

➡ The Rumba originates from Cuba and started life as a communal street-based dance set to the sound of wooden boxes and spoons. Today, a Rumba is more likely to be danced to big band music with Afro-Cuban rhythms.

➡ Why is the Rumba so good for you? For the avid Strictly Come Dancing watchers among you, you'll know that strong hip action is important with this dance. Exercising your hips provides your legs with a stronger foundation, allowing your lower body in particular to be more mobile ❤🏃

We are pleased to share a Symptoms Group for older adults and carers, running locally in Sutton Coldfield at Sutton Coldfield Methodist Church.

This group is for older adults experiencing ongoing or medically unexplained symptoms, and for carers who support them. It offers a welcoming and supportive space to explore experiences of symptoms, share concerns, and consider ways to improve wellbeing and daily life.

The sessions are informal, friendly, and focused on understanding, connection, and support.

You do not need to be a Sutton Coldfield resident to take part in this project.

If you are an older adult, or a carer supporting someone who may benefit, please feel free to get in touch for more information.

Please do share with anyone in your local community who may find this helpful.

⭐ Throwback Thursday ⭐

This week, we dug into the archives and found a gem of a photo from 2020, back when classes were held online. If there had been any more people in the class, we might not have fit on the screen! The lines created by those extended arms are simply gorgeous. 💖

Can you spot yourself in this photo, or do you have any memories you would like to share of this class? As usual, let us know in the comments below!
