Before you touch the clay, establish the structure. ✏️

The Rapid Sketch Technique is a key part of the Sinclair Method : helping you understand proportion, pose and anatomy before committing to form.

Here’s how to begin:

⭐ Start with the overall gesture and direction of the body.
⭐ Mark the major anatomical landmarks: top of the head, shoulders, ribcage, pelvis, knees and feet.
⭐ Check the relationships between these points : not just the individual measurements.
⭐ Refine the silhouette and balance before adding detail.

This quick, purposeful sketch is not about creating a finished drawing. It is a practical map for your sculpture.

By taking a few moments to think in proportion first, you can work with greater confidence, avoid costly corrections and build a more convincing figure from the very beginning. 👐

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced sculptor, a strong method makes realistic results far more achievable.

Ready to strengthen your understanding of the human figure? Explore our online Sculpt A Realistic Human Figure course and learn the Sinclair Method step by step. ✨

Why do some sculptures feel balanced and alive, while others never quite come together? ✨

The answer often begins beneath the surface.

In the Sinclair Method, realistic sculpture is built from the inside out : starting with a strong armature and accurate anatomical structure before refining the surface.

⭐ The armature establishes the pose, weight and overall proportions.
⭐ Key anatomical landmarks create a reliable framework for the figure.
⭐ Muscles are then developed in relation to the skeleton, movement and tension.
⭐ Only after the structure is working do we refine the planes, forms and surface details.

This systematic approach prevents a common frustration: spending hours on beautifully modelled details while the underlying figure remains unstable or disproportionate.

When the internal structure is right, the sculpture becomes easier to develop : and the final result feels more convincing, dynamic and full of life.

Whether you are completely new to clay or refining your professional practice, learning to see and build the figure in this way can transform your results.

Delighted to share these great photos- one very happy student showing off her fantastic sculpture at the end of her 1:1 moulding & casting course with Andy.
Trudi originally sculpted her lion head on our animal portrait course earlier this year (and has kept it ‘watered’ like a houseplant until this week)! Fabulous result!
If you’d like to follow in Trudi’s footsteps and book your own 1:1 tuition - do get in touch! Either DM us or email [email protected].

Is your sculpture losing proportion before you’ve even begun? ✏️

The Sinclair Method Rapid Sketch Technique helps you map the figure’s structure quickly : before committing to clay.

Start by identifying:
⭐ The overall gesture and line of action
⭐ The head as a proportional guide
⭐ Key anatomical landmarks, such as the shoulders, ribcage, pelvis, knees and feet
⭐ The centre line and major directional axes

This fast structural sketch is not about creating a finished drawing. It is a practical map : helping you check balance, rhythm and anatomical relationships at the earliest stage.

By establishing proportion first, you can work with greater confidence and avoid spending hours refining details that rest on an unstable structure.

A few purposeful lines can make the difference between a sculpture that feels stiff and one that feels dynamic, balanced and alive. ✨

Try the Rapid Sketch Technique before your next figure study and see how much more clearly your sculpture develops.

Save this post as a reminder : and keep refining your eye, one proportion at a time.
