SAMS is an independent marine science organisation that provides the research, education and enterprise that society needs to protect and make use of our seas and oceans. Founded in 1884 by Sir John Murray, SAMS is the UK's oldest marine science organisation. Since the late 1960s it has been located near Oban on the west coast of Scotland, with access to diverse oceanographic environments. It is a
n academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands, employs around 160 staff, trains over 200 full-time students and supports business through its wholly owned specialist consultancy company, SAMS Enterprise, and as the focal point of the European Marine Science Park. SAMS' multidisciplinary researchers focus on three complex societal challenges: to increase our understanding of ocean systems (by studying physical oceanography, ecosystem function, biogeochemist and Arctic science); to provide tools and knowledge to manage the health and uses of our changing coasts (by researching climate change impacts, pollution, marine conservation, fisheries and social science); and to support the development of a sustainable blue economy (focusing on aquaculture including seaweed production, energy generation, and biotechnology). The organisation has excellent research infrastructure with Europe's largest and most diverse Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa; the North Atlantic Glider Base and a robotics development facility; the sizeable Alan Ansell research aquarium with indoor and outdoor tanks; an artificial reef and underwater observatory, labs, workshops and conference facilities. Beyond research SAMS delivers education at all levels. The Ocean Explorer Centre is a visitor and outreach facility aimed at inspiring and engaging general audiences through an interactive exhibition, science workshops for schools and special interest groups, and events. Through our university partnership we deliver undergraduate courses in marine science, marine science with Arctic studies and marine science with oceanography and robotics. We also run a joint Erasmus-Mundus funded Master in Aquaculture, Environment and Society; a Masters by Research in algal biotechnology, biology, and ecology; and support a PhD student community of around 30 doctoral researchers.
