This is not a post to make parents feel guilty about screens. Most families use screens because life is busy, full, expensive and exhausting. But children still need real-world movement to build the skills screens cannot give them.

Rolling.
Crawling.
Pushing.
Pulling.
Balancing.
Climbing.
Messy play.
Outdoor play.
Social play.

These experiences help children build body awareness, confidence, coordination, regulation and connection.

It does not have to be complicated. A few minutes of playful movement each day can help a child’s body feel more organised and ready to learn.

At Play Move Improve, I help parents and educators understand children through movement, play and connection.

Starting School Tip

Information that can be shared with your parents within your setting.

Creating Calm, Positive Mornings

Getting the day off to a gentle, well-planned start can really help your child feel relaxed, confident and ready for school. Here are a few simple ideas that can make mornings easier for everyone:

✨ Get organised the evening before – lay out clothes, pack bags and fill water bottles to save time in the morning

🥣 Offer a nutritious breakfast to fuel your child for the day ahead

🗣️ Chat about what’s coming up so your child feels prepared and reassured

👋 Keep goodbyes positive and remind them you’ll be there at the end of the day

🖼️ Try making a simple daily routine chart using pictures or drawings to help your child understand the order of their day

Establishing small, consistent routines can help children feel safe, settled and ready to embrace their new school adventure 😊

Screens are now part of everyday family life, but for very young children, clear and predictable boundaries can help screen time feel calm rather than constant.

Our latest guide shares practical advice for families, nurseries and early years settings on supporting healthier digital habits for under-fives.

The guide covers:
• Choosing age-appropriate content
• Protecting bedtime routines
• Keeping devices in shared spaces
• Co-viewing and talking about what children see
• Using simple scripts and transition warnings
• Modelling balanced device use as adults

With supportive tips and realistic routines, this guide helps adults manage screen time with greater confidence.
