Important update for first aid trainers and workplaces!
The UKHSA has issued guidance on infection risks linked to non-sterile alcohol-free wipes commonly found in first aid kits.
Key reminder:
βοΈ Only use sterile wipes or saline for wound care
β βAlcohol-freeβ does not mean sterile
Now is a good time to check your training kits, workplace kits, and home first aid supplies.

At WorkSafe, we often talk about the importance of practical, hands-on first aid training, but every so often, we hear about a learner experience that brings this message to life.
Recently, Alex, one of our WorkSafe instructors delivering courses for South East Landbased Training, received incredible news from a former student who found themselves facing a real-life emergency.
While in a public car park, the student witnessed a man suddenly collapse. A member of the public had already begun CPR, and without hesitation, the former trainee stepped in to help.
Drawing directly on the techniques practised during training, they retrieved a defibrillator and followed the process they had learned in class. Over the next 30 minutes, rescuers worked together to provide continuous lifesaving care until paramedics arrived.
The defibrillator advised two shocks during the incident, while CPR was maintained throughout. Rescuers rotated chest compressions to ensure they remained effective β a key part of quality resuscitation.
When paramedics reached the scene, they praised the calm and professional response. The emergency team asked the rescuers to continue performing CPR because everything was being carried out correctly.
The casualty, Nigel, was transported to hospital alive.
In the days that followed, more remarkable news arrived. After intensive care treatment, Nigel made a full recovery with no neurological damage. Doctors later explained that the high standard of CPR delivered at the scene played a significant role in that outcome.
One comment from the learner particularly stood out to us:
βThe defibrillator deployment worked exactly as we had practised during the training. That practical scenario-based exercise stayed with me under pressure and made a real difference on the day.β
This incident is a powerful reminder of why realistic training matters.
We are incredibly proud that the training delivered by Alex helped give someone the confidence to step forward and save a life.

A safe workplace supports more than physical safety β mental wellbeing matters too.
This Mental Health Awareness Week, weβre recognising the important role workplace first aiders play, not only in emergencies, but in supporting people through difficult moments.
First Aid at Work training now includes additional guidance around su***de awareness and the emotional pressures first aiders themselves may face after responding to incidents.
Looking after others starts with looking after ourselves too.
Healthy teams build safer workplaces.
