Spring is the perfect time to get outside and turn learning into an adventure! Try our Nature Bingo Challenge with your child during a walk in the park or garden.

While completing Nature Bingo, encourage your child to look closely at the world around them, spotting trees, animals, insects, and other features of nature.

Talk together about what they notice and see if they can describe their discoveries or keep count of how many they find. It’s an easy way to develop observation skills, language, and a little maths through outdoor exploration.

Word games are a brilliant way to build spelling and vocabulary skills. Challenge your child to create the longest word they can, using as many of these letters as possible.
Games like Scrabble encourage strategic thinking, spelling accuracy and creativity, all essential literacy skills.
Learning through play makes progress feel like fun.

Rainbows are not only beautiful but they’re also science in action!
A rainbow forms when sunlight passes through tiny raindrops in the air. As the light enters each drop, it slows down and bends. This process is called refraction. Sunlight may look white, but it is actually made up of many different colours, each with a different wavelength.
Because each colour bends by a slightly different amount, the light spreads out into separate colours as it leaves the raindrop. Red bends the least, while violet bends the most, which is why rainbows always appear in the same sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Curiosity about everyday phenomena helps children develop a love of science and discovery.

The Easter holidays are a great opportunity to keep learning routines steady. Maintaining regular practice helps children stay confident in their skills and makes returning to the classroom feel familiar and manageable.

Short, consistent learning sessions can help reinforce key maths and English concepts, strengthen understanding, and prevent gaps from forming. Progress in education is built through small, regular steps taken over time rather than last-minute pressure.

At First Class Learning, we help students stay on track with structured support that builds confidence step by step.

Scaling helps us use maps to work out real distances.

A map scale shows how much smaller the map is compared to real life.

If 1 cm on a map = 5 km in real life, and two towns are 4 cm apart on the map, how far apart are they in real life?

Can you work it out? The answer is below.

Answer: 4 cm × 5 km = 20 km

A compound sentence is when two main clauses are joined using a conjunction.
Children often use and, but, and so, which is great, but using more advanced conjunctions makes writing more interesting and helps prepare for SATs.
Can your child complete these using: however, therefore, meanwhile,
1. I was nervous __________ I tried my best.
2. She loves English __________ she finds maths harder.
3. He revised well __________ he felt confident.
Encouraging children to use a wider range of conjunctions helps them become more confident, independent and higher-level writers. Don’t forget the punctuation!
Is your child looking to improve their writing skills? Book a FREE assessment on 07305383738 and lets us create a tailored tuition programme just for them.
