School starts tomorrow. 💙
If your child is starting Year 5 or Year 6, you might already be thinking about SATs…
Or perhaps even 11+.
But here’s what I’d say as a teacher:
Don’t panic. Don’t start with endless practice papers.
I’d start with the foundations:
Can they understand grammar?
Can they recognise how sentences work?
Can they explain punctuation?
Can they apply what they know in context?
Can they read deeply and understand what they’ve read?
Because knowing a rule isn’t enough.
Children need to understand it, recognise it and use it.
That’s the foundation I’ll be talking about throughout September.
🌱 Build the English. Then build the score.
If you’re a Year 5 or Year 6 parent, save this post.We are going to build this together.
If you know a Year 5 or Year 6 parent who needs to see this, send it to them.
