This was so lovely to observe. The children found a snail in the den and decided to use an egg box to create a home. They used scissors to cut leaves, looked for damp soil and stones and watched in excited anticipation as it wondered around, using great language to describe that they could see and asked great questions to extend their learning.

“Who’s playing today Louisa, shall we look it up?” everyday the children have loved looking at flags and learning the names of different countries. We’ve explored different ways to copy the flags using pens, paints, mosaic stones and threading beads. Who’s going to win tonight!? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇨🇩

Children love playing with real materials and being trusted with breakables. It helps them risk asses, make judgement, explore shape, size and many maths concepts, expands vocabulary and ignites curiosity, owe and wonder.

My little team love helping to lay the table and serve their own food, it has so many benefits. Self service fosters independence, builds on motor skills like hand-eye coordination, and encourages them to listen to their own hunger cues. Giving children control over what goes on their plate also makes them more willing to try new foods and reduces mealtime struggles. It’s also a lovely social experience, the children learn to pass things to each other and wait until it is their turn. They feel very grown up and it’s great for self esteem.

“we’ve had a spillaige” Is a sentence we hear often in this house! Today made me smile as I watched my little team deal with the spilt water jug at tea time. They moved the plates out of the way, got the cloth and mopped up the water. They were calm, relaxed and confident. Making mistakes and having accidents is all apart of life, how we respond to children in these moments is so important, having a safe space to make mistakes helps shape how they deal with problems in later life.

Materials like clay, playdoh and plasticine are essential in early years education. They promote the foundations of Fine Motor Skills and Hand-Eye Coordination, build vital muscle strength for future writing, and encourage spatial awareness. Other great benefits of these open-ended materials provide a calming sensory experience and act as powerful tools for emotional regulation and creative expression. We try and make sure we have access to them daily. Look at these lovely concoctions being made in the mud kitchen today 💫 ❤️✋🏾
