Dear All,
With the closure of the schools and so many people being isolated, we are going to start running online lessons every weekday afternoon from 2:00 - 2:50 (starting from tomorrow Monday).
How Much Will They Cost?
If you pay for the group lessons in Maths, English or Science, your child can attend the relevant subject lessons for free. Eg. If they normally attend Maths group lessons, the online Maths lessons will be free for you.
The first week will be a trial to iron out any technological issues and make sure students can access the learning easily and effectively. Only students who attend group lessons at the moment will be able to attend these online lessons. Once we have completed the trial successfully, we will open up these lessons to other students.
After the trial, we are looking to increase the number of online lessons we run, and there will be a charge to attend these lessons if you don't already pay for the group lessons. They will remain free for existing group students. We will provide more details of costs and timetables once the trial is complete.
Do We Need To Sign Up For These Lessons?
Places in these lessons will be limited. They will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you wish your child to take part in these trial lessons, please reply to this email saying which days you want to child to attend.
What Does My Child Need To Access The Lessons?
In order to take part, your child will need:
A desk with a computer (ideally one with a we**am - a laptop would be perfect). A we**am/microphone is not required, but it will help a lot (they will be able to speak to the teacher rather than typing questions).
An internet connection
All their usual school equipment (paper, pencil case, etc.)
How Does the Technology Side Work?
We will be using a platform called Zoom to provide video conferencing between the teacher and the students. The students will be able to see and hear the teacher, and the teacher will be able to see and hear the students.
At the start of the lesson, your child should click on the following link:
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/5673933930
This will require them to install a small piece of software that will enable them to connect to the lesson. No other software is required. If they have any trouble connecting, they should ring us on 0115 8240466 and we will help them to get going.
If you have any questions, feel free to email or give us a ring.

Dear All,
As the government's response to the coronavirus situation develops, we are rapidly adjusting! They announced yesterday that no exams would take place for the current cohort of Year 11s and Year 13s. These students will continue on to A Levels/College/University in September (or when the schools re-open if they are still closed then).
How will their grades be determined?
This isn't clear at the moment. The most likely situation is that the teachers will provide predicted grades. There are issues with this, but we will have to wait to see how this plays out.
Should we continue with lessons at Guide?
Your response to this will probably depend on what year your child is in:
Year 7 - 10
Your child will be steadily working towards sitting their GCSE exams. The long absence from school could cause a serious setback for them if they don't continue to study and develop their skills. We strongly recommend that they continue lessons at Guide. With the reduced numbers, they will benefit even more from our lessons. Should they be unable to attend the physical lessons, we will be running online lessons that they can participate in at home (see below).
Year 11
If your child is continuing onto A Levels, they should continue attending relevant lessons. If they do no work until they begin their A Levels, they will struggle a great deal. The step up from GCSE to A Level is significant. A strong command of English will be relevant for every A Level (even Maths!). Obviously Maths and Science won't be relevant if they are studying History or English Literature, but if they will be doing Science-based subjects (even things like Psychology or Economics), then both of these subjects will be relevant.
If they aren't doing A Levels and just need to pass their GCSE Maths and English, then a lot may depend on the grades they are given by their teachers. If they don't get the grades they need, they will need to sit the November resit exams. If they are a borderline student and don't do much work over the next few months, they will almost certainly fail their resits, which we really want to avoid. It is better to be safe than sorry here. They should definitely keep attending.
Year 12
Much like the Year 10 students, it is critical that Year 12 students maintain a high level of work over the next few months. Otherwise they will fall behind and their exam results next year will suffer. They should definitely continue. If they cannot attend physical lessons, speak to your tutor about an online alternative.
Year 13
Like the Year 11 students, Year 13 students should continue with relevant lessons. If they are doing Maths at University and do no Maths until September, they will find the transition very difficult and will lack the support structures to help them through it since they will most likely be away from home.
What are these online lessons? How will they work?
I will be sending a separate email about these, detailing the timetable and how you can access these lessons.
If you are unsure about what to do, please give us a ring and we can discuss options.
