Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and the incredible women who shape the future of discovery in the School of Physics and Astronomy. 🔭✨
From exploring the origins of the universe to advancing cutting-edge technology, women across our community—students, researchers, academics, and staff—are driving innovation, curiosity, and progress every day.
We recognise the achievements of the women who have paved the way in physics and astronomy, and we celebrate those who continue to challenge boundaries, inspire the next generation, and make our field more inclusive and diverse.
Let’s continue working together to support, uplift, and empower women in science—today and every day.

🐾💙 Post-Exam relaxation, the best way!
Therapy dogs Bertie & Ruby popped by to visit our Physics & Astronomy and students, offering cuddles, calm and plenty of smiles after assessments.
It was lovely to see everyone taking a well-deserved break, switching off and recharging with some furry friends - exactly the kind of reset we all need 🐶✨️
🎂🐾Extra special visit as it was also Bertie's 7th Birthday!

✨ Big congratulations to our own Dr Helen Russell! ✨ Dr Russell from the School of Physics & Astronomy has been awarded almost £1 million from the Leverhulme Trust for her research into the physics of supermassive black holes 🕳️🌌
She’ll be using the newly launched XRISM satellite (developed by NASA and the Japanese Space Agency) — and is the only UK-based astronomer awarded observing time in its first science call. An incredible achievement!
🔭 Want to find out more?
Drop into an Informal Research Drop-In Session with Dr Russell:
📅 Friday 30 January
⏰ 12:00–13:00
📍 Masters Common Room, School of Physics

🎓✨ To the Physics Class of 2025 — you bent time, mastered the math, and proved that gravity’s got nothing on your potential. From quantum leaps in the lab to real-world impact on the horizon, you’ve earned your place among the stars. 💫
Here’s to curiosity, resilience, and every equation that brought you here. The universe is yours to explore. 🚀🪐
