To my ergonomist and UoN friends - we recently heard the sad news that Dr. Christine Haslegrave died last week. Many of the you in the national and international ergonomics community will be very familiar with her work and its impact.
Christine spent the majority of her academic career at the University of Nottingham, joining the Production Engineering department in the mid 1980s (I think). Before that she worked at MIRA where her work was influential in some of the early considerations of physical ergonomics in design of seatbelts.
As many of you will remember she also authored the book “Bodyspace” - completing the revised edition after the death of the original author Stephen Pheasant. This book remains a core text for workspace design today. Christine was also a very long serving reviewer and editor for the journal Ergonomics. Christine also had strong ties to Loughborough University, including through her father who was the Vice Chancellor there in the 1960s. She received the Otto Edholm medal in recognition of her lifetime contribution and impact of her work in 1995 from the then Ergonomics Society.
Her family would love to hear stories about Christine’s work and its impact. I’m sure many of her past colleagues and students will have great memories of her vast knowledge and astonishing attention to detail.
Please do feel free share this post to let people know. Either post memories of Christine here or if you would prefer please email me or Brendan Ryan on our Nottingham emails (we are both [email protected]) and we will compile the memories to be shared at her funeral and will put an obituary together for The Ergonomist. I’ll also let you know when we have any details of the funeral.
