We are delighted to be joined by two leading UN experts to address this urgent and evolving child rights crisis: Ann Skelton (Chairperson, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child) and Farida Shaheed (UN Special Rapporteur on the right to education).
Both the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to education have engaged extensively with the child rights issues raised by the Israel-Palestine conflict. This seminar is a unique opportunity to get their perspectives on the challenges and potential solutions in terms of childrenโs rights.
The discussion will be moderated by Aoife Nolan (Professor of International Human Rights Law / Director of the Human Rights Law Centre, University of Nottingham).

We will be screening Annemarie Jacirโs award-winning film 'When I Saw You', a poignant drama set in the 1960s exploring the intertwined trauma of a child refugee experiencing the loss of their father and the uncertainty of statelessness.

In light of the recent publication of the new textbook Public International Law: A Multi-Perspective Approach edited by Suรฉ Gonzรกlez-Hauck, Raffaela Kunz and Max Milas (Taylor and Francis, 2024), the HRLC is hosting a workshop to discuss the potential and difficulties in writing more diverse textbooks on international law and human rights law.

Judge Jeliฤ will be joining us to discuss her experiences working in the field of human rights law. She served as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee from 2015-18, latterly as its Vice-President, and was appointed as a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights on 12 July 2018.

AMICUS is a due process, fair trials not-for-profit organisation that fights for individuals facing death sentences in the US. AMICUS also facilitates the training and placement of lawyers and postgraduate students to support capital defence offices across the US, including hosting UoN law students as part of the undergraduate year abroad programme with The University of Texas at Austin.
The event will feature a panel of speakers discussing AMICUSโs work, providing insights into the current legal challenges and issues in the US, with a focus on Texas, and highlighting the contributions of UoN students over the years. Presentations will be followed by a Q/A discussion session.
