Motorsport Technology - Electronics Fundamentals 28/10/2014

In a modern motor vehicle, electric circuits do everything including sensors, wipers, heater fan, head lights, tail lights, stop lights, indicators, hazard system, reverse lights, cigarette lighter, stereo, alarm, demister etc. This album will demonstrate a basic understanding of the functions and meaning of electrical and electronic components and circuitry with some automotive applications.

Motorport Technology - Rally Car Safety Scrutineering 04/10/2014

The purpose of the scrutineering is to check basic safety for the race vehicle, suit and helmet. There are specific areas which will be checked and if the checks fail then the driver will not be allowed to enter the race.

Once the race vehicle, suit and helmet have passed the checks, driver will then be given a scrutineering label which needs to be affixed to a visible part of the car. Without a valid scrutineering label, the driver will not be allowed to enter the race.

In this album, there are five basic safety inspection areas and one case study will be explained. The inspections are based on rally cars scrutineering; some inspections may be slightly different for other types of race cars.

Motorsport Technology - High Performance Multi-Plate Clutch 03/10/2014

“Power is nothing without control” (www.pirelli.com) which is an advertising promotion quote from Pirelli Tyre Company in German. This quote has exact meaning for the clutch system which is commonly used today.

As we all understand, the principle of the clutch is to take the engine power and transfer it through gearbox, differential, drive shaft and finally to the driven wheels with tyres and it allows driver to disengage the engine whilst performing a gear change.

From this point, clutch contact does need a lot of grips (a lot of control in other mean). Power will be losing if the clutch has slipped (As engine power output is greater than rated power of the clutch) and fail to make enough contact with the contact plate when the clutch is engaged. More powerful engine is required to have more heavy duty clutch contact, a high performance multi-plate clutch will be one of the best choice.

In this album, I am going to use two examples HKS & AP (Fast road / Competition/Race clutch) to show how a modern high-performance multi-plate constructs.

Motosport Technology - Basic Engine Design & Operating Principles 03/10/2014

This album will demonstrate knowledge of the design and operating principles of internal combustion engine, which base on the popular FOUR stroke patrol engine with two valves Hemi, two valves Wedge and four valves Pent-roof chamber design.

Motorsport Technology – Basic Engine Mapping Information 02/10/2014

Mapping is like two faces: one side very simple thing – you only need to control air, fuel and ignition. One side is very complex adjustments which no many people understand. In this album I will simply show you the “BASIC” information of mapping set up by Megasquirt system (Tuner Studio MS).

http://www.efianalytics.com/TunerStudio

There is a lot of information from above website for mapping information – but I have to tell you…..most people just simply lost inside ton of ton’s information.

MegaSquirt is a powerful and inexpensive mappable ECU that can be programmed or configured to work with any vehicles. The method to install the MegaSquirt is to link from the MS ECU to the engine stock sensors or upgrade sensors to control / alter fuel and spark.

The most common sensors for Megasquirt system to control fuel and spark are: throttle position sensor, coolant & air intake temperature sensors, O2 sensor, idle air control sensor, injector, crankshaft position sensor and MAP/ MAF sensor. More other sensors can be added on to control nitrous, water injection, boost control and knock control, etc

Set a number of correct parameters that will determine how MS TunerStudio performs. These basic set up include engine constants, required fuel, ignition setting, injector characteristics, and trigger wheel setting etc. These constants are either calculated, or based on the configuration of the engine. Setting pictures were screen shot from the MS TunerStudio.

The engine specification is based from a Global GT Light 1000c 4 cylinders engine race car. All the setting recommendations are from www.extraefi.co.uk.
