Outdoor learning is an important part of life at Awsworth Schoolhouse Day Nursery.

Our outdoor environment gives children the freedom to explore, investigate and learn in ways that simply cannot always be replicated indoors.

Whether they are digging in the soil, planting seeds, watching plants grow, collecting natural treasures or noticing the changes in the seasons, children have countless opportunities to connect with the natural world.

Our outdoor spaces also encourage children to be creative and imaginative. They can build, create, experiment, solve problems and work together with friends. Sometimes they might find a quiet space to enjoy a story, have a peaceful moment or simply take time to observe what is happening around them.

Every outdoor experience brings something different. It might be energetic and adventurous, or calm and reflective — and both are equally valuable.

Through outdoor play, children develop confidence, resilience, independence, communication and problem-solving skills, while building friendships and discovering what they are capable of.

At Awsworth Schoolhouse Day Nursery, our babies learn through their senses.

For our youngest children, sensory experiences are an important part of learning and development. Here, our baby is exploring mark making using their hands and fingers, feeling the texture of the paint and discovering how their movements create different marks.

These simple experiences encourage babies to explore, investigate and make connections through touch, while also supporting fine motor development, hand strength, coordination and early communication and language skills.

Most importantly, they are given the freedom to explore at their own pace, building curiosity and confidence through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Our children have been getting creative in our mud kitchen, making their very own mud cakes using soil and a wonderful selection of natural materials. 🍂🌱

With shells, sticks, leaves and other treasures from nature, the children explored textures, developed their imagination and enjoyed lots of opportunities for language, creativity and sensory play.

We believe outdoor learning should be full of meaningful, hands-on experiences where children can explore, discover and have fun. 💚
