🌱 Small steps. Big progress. 🌱
At Awsworth Schoolhouse Day Nursery, we know that every child develops at their own pace, and every achievement, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.
Each day, our practitioners carefully observe, support and nurture children’s learning, helping them build on their interests, strengths and experiences. By understanding where children are in their development, we can provide meaningful opportunities that encourage them to take their next steps with confidence.
This means:
✨ Building on existing skills and knowledge
✨ Encouraging independence and self-confidence
✨ Supporting communication, social skills and problem-solving
✨ Helping every child make steady progress in a way that is right for them
To children, it may look like play, exploration and fun. Behind the scenes, our team thoughtfully plans experiences that inspire curiosity, challenge thinking and support development across all areas of learning.
And this is how we help children become ready for school.
By the time they move on to their next adventure, they are:
💛 Confident to have a go
💬 Able to express their thoughts, ideas and needs
🖐 Increasingly independent in their daily routines
🌟 Curious, resilient and eager to learn
Because school readiness is about so much more than numbers and letters.
It’s about helping children develop the confidence, independence and emotional security they need to embrace new experiences and thrive.

🎯✨ Real Concentration in Action! ✨🎯
The children showed fantastic levels of concentration during a finger gym activity. We placed pom-poms inside a whisk and challenged the children to remove them using both their fingers and tweezers.
They spent a long time focused on the task, carefully working out how to grip and pull the pom-poms free. Activities like this help to strengthen the small muscles in the hands and fingers, supporting the development of fine motor skills needed for future writing and self-care tasks.
It was wonderful to see the children persevering, problem-solving and taking pride in their achievements as they successfully removed the pom-poms. 🌟

The children enjoyed a fun and creative outdoor activity using fly swatters to splat paint and create beautiful, colourful butterflies!
As they swung and pressed the fly swatters into the paint, the children explored different colours and patterns, watching with excitement as their marks appeared on the large cardboard.
This activity supported many areas of learning, including:
🎨 Expressive Arts and Design – exploring colour, creativity and different ways of making marks.
💪 Physical Development – strengthening arm, shoulder and hand muscles through large movements and controlled actions.
🖐️ Fine and Gross Motor Skills – developing coordination and control while handling the fly swatters.
🗣️ Communication and Language – discussing colours, patterns and describing what they could see.
🔍 Understanding the World – learning about butterflies and observing how colours mix and change.
The children had lots of fun experimenting, creating unique butterfly masterpieces and enjoying the freedom of outdoor learning! 🌈🦋✨

🏡🐞 Connections from Home 🐞🏡
We love celebrating children’s interests and experiences from home and bringing them into their learning at nursery.
Recently, a parent asked if their child could bring in their bug catcher from home. The following day, they proudly brought it in and were excited to share it with their friends.
The children spent time exploring the outdoor environment, carefully searching for different bugs to observe and place in the bug catcher. There was lots of excitement as they discovered insects hiding in different places and talked about what they had found.
By following children’s interests and making connections between home and nursery, we create meaningful learning experiences that build confidence, encourage curiosity and support children’s understanding of the natural world.
Thank you to our families for helping us extend children’s learning beyond the nursery walls! 🌿🔍🐛

🌳✨ A wonderful spontaneous child-led learning moment! ✨🌳
While exploring outdoors, some of the children began hiding behind the tree trunks. As staff playfully said “peek-a-boo!”, this quickly sparked a delightful game of peek-a-boo filled with giggles, smiles and lots of laughter.
These simple, child-initiated moments are so valuable. Through playful interactions, children develop their social skills, communication, turn-taking and understanding of object permanence, all whilst building positive relationships with their peers and educators.
The joy on their faces said it all! 💚😊
