M.V. Nottingham (1949-71)

Is anyone who remember this model ship at Ewing School ?
I do during my time at the school in the 1960s.
As part of our education we have been writing letters/drawings to the crew of the ship wherever she sailing the world.
One pupil named Keith who are good in art painting have sent a painting of a bridge on cliff sides over a waterfall which hang on the wall in the oak panelling dining room on the ship.
I was one of the pupils who went onboard the ship at Hull Docks in the late 60s, I do recall the tours of the engine room, wheelhouse and had lunch in the dining room. The captain at that time was John North. Whose lifetime was spent in the Merchant Navy. I remember he has brought some cine films for us to watch the ship in various parts of the world.

When the school was closed this model ship moved to the NDS (former school) on Forest Rd, where it stand in the bar lounge then multi-purpose room for decades.

When the NDS building was sold two years ago this went into the care of former pupil and her husband.

Now I have the model ship in my possession and there is a few bits mostly masts are broken, as a keen railway modeller myself will try to repair them, clean & smarten the model ship.

My view is historically the ship are linked to the school and the city which bear its name, my plan is to donate the model ship enclosed with glass cabinet to volunteer-run Industrial Museum at The Stable buildings in the grounds of Wollaton Hall.
A small part of the exhibitions there is display of all ships/warships which bear the name “Nottingham” over the centuries.
It will be good for our ship to be displayed there for generations to view.
I will make sure that our school will get a mention of our association with the ship.

Do you all agree with me ??

It’s 30 years since the closure of Ewing School.

How are all former pupils & staff today? Still alive ?
I did post a few about over the time of the passing of Mr Bastable, Mrs Wagstaff and Mr Keetley!
Is there any pupils or other staff who may have passed away ?
Would be nice to be remembered their passing by posting here & when!
Thanks !

You probably see & heard news from media about the 80th anniversary of the ending of World War 2 and VJ Day (Victory in Japan) on 15th August.

Our headmaster Mr French do have wartime stories to tell, I do still remember!

He was in Burma with Royal Artillery and he was good with mathematics so he was trained to be a forward observer for the gunners.
He went to the battle lines in the jungle, armed with long range binoculars and a radio.
He would find Japanese’s positions, work out the coordinates and radioed the gunners to fire shells at the enemy positions.
Months after the Japanese surrender, he came home and demobbed from the Army and went on to forge a career in teaching, first at Margate then the School on Forest Rd.
