Recruitment Closed – Thank You!
We would like to inform you that recruitment for our study is now officially closed. After careful consideration, we’ve decided to stop recruiting new participants in order to focus on the next stage of our research.
We are truly grateful to everyone who showed interest, helped spread the word, and especially to those who took part in the study. Your time, commitment, and support mean a great deal to us, and this research wouldn’t be possible without you.
If you contacted us but didn’t get the chance to participate, please know that we deeply appreciate your interest.
Thank you again from all of us on the research team!

*** VOLUNTEERS IN NOTTINGHAM NEEDED ***
The University of Nottingham is testing the combined effects of beetroot juice (dietary nitrate) plus a weight-loss diet (caloric restriction) on the brain and vascular functions.
We need the help of volunteers aged 60-75 years, overall healthy, non-smoking, and living with overweight or obesity (BMI 25-40 kg/m2).
The study will include two visits: before and after the 28-day intervention. It involves consuming beetroot juice with a diet for 28 days (drinks and food will be provided), having two (before and after) brain MRI scans (15 minutes/scan), and measurements of vascular and cognitive functions.
On completion, an inconvenience allowance will be paid, and all food will be provided for four weeks.
If you are interested in taking part and living in Nottingham or the surrounding area (up to 10 miles from the University), please click and fill in the Google form link below. We will contact you by phone or email in the next few weeks.

The CRNitrateMRI study is a nutrition study investigating the combined effects of beetroot juice (dietary nitrate) plus a weight-loss diet (caloric restriction) on the brain and vascular functions. We are interested in recruiting people who are older adults (aged 60-75 years old) living with overweight or obesity (BMI 25-40kg/m2).
There is evidence to suggest that consuming beetroot juice, a good source of dietary nitrate, whilst restricting your energy intake may improve cognition (e.g., memory), brain blood flow, and blood vessel function.
The study results will help us develop larger and longer studies to test the effects of combining dietary nitrate and energy restriction in people at a higher risk of developing diseases related to cognitive declines, like dementia.
The study will involve drinking beetroot juice and following a diet for 28 days. You will have two brain MRI scan, and measurements of cognitive and vascular function.
On completion, an inconvenience allowance will be paid, and all food will be provided for four weeks.
Thank you for your interest in the CRNitrateMRI study. The University of Nottingham Faculty of Medicine Research Ethics Committee approved the study, reference FMHS 323-0723.
