What is External Mentoring?

The External Mentoring scheme is an optional scheme run by the LMC to pair Law students with professionals who specialise in a particular area of the legal field. Students who would like to be a part of this scheme will have to fill out a form, which will allow the LMC to pair students with mentors according to their compatibility.

Previously, the scheme focused mainly on pairing students with mentors from law firms. Mentors have come from a range of practices including Slaughter and May, Eversheds Sutherland, and Gateley.

However, this year, the LMC hopes to diversify the range of legal careers that mentors come from. Depending on the indicated interest, this could include barristers, trademark and patent attorneys, and officers of the Government Legal Service (GLS).

Any questions/queries, feel free to message us directly via this page and one of the Law Mentoring Committee will get back to you as soon as possible.

What is the Optional Module Handbook?

The Optional Modules Handbook should help you to make those difficult decisions about optional module choices! It is a compilation of honest and meaningful feedback on each optional module, given by students who have previously taken the modules. When reading the Handbook, you should receive an accurate reflection, overview and insiders’ opinion of each module.

Before the submission for optional module choices opens, we ask law students to complete a short survey about the modules that they have previously taken. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete and should help save you asking each of your peers about recommendations for module choices.
When using the LMC’s guide, we ask students to remember it is not an exhaustive guide to all the available modules. They should, therefore, us it as a reference alongside the School of Law's Official Modules Guide. Some modules do also differ in the coming year and feedback cannot always be gathered or presented for every single module.

New for 2017/18: we want advice from Law and Languages people about their final-year module options!

ALL of our sessions, schemes, talks, handbooks, and workshops will be FREE.

What is Internal Mentoring?

Hi, everyone!

The main focus of the Internal Mentoring scheme is to ensure that all law students are supported and have access to advice and resources within the law school. To facilitate this, there will be targeted drop-in sessions when coursework is due in. Don’t worry! We won’t be providing the answers but we will be happy to guide students about useful content as well as helping you with answering techniques such as structure and style.

We’re also thinking of doing some initial sessions focused on first years asking how to use Westlaw and LexisNexis (as legal research will be incredibly important both in law school in future careers!). Other sessions will include as a session for prospective year abroad applicants and a vacation scheme workshop.

We’re planning an exciting year ahead so do keep up with the posts and let us know what you’d like to see! (I just think saying everything in the works sounds like we don’t have any concrete plans!)

Any questions/queries, feel free to message us directly via this page and one of the Law Mentoring Committee will get back to you as soon as possible.
