An estimated 𝟯𝟮𝟴,𝟬𝟬𝟬 people working in the industry are also living with hearing loss or tinnitus — making this a serious issue for safety, communication and inclusion on site.

CITB has announced support for an initiative aiming to create the first construction-specific deaf awareness and hearing loss training programme, developed with Bovis, RNID and other industry partners.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴:
✅ Recognising the impact of hearing loss
✅ Communicating effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing colleagues
✅ Improving safety and collaboration
✅ Creating more inclusive workplaces
✅ Supporting recruitment, onboarding and retention

At least 500 people will take part in the initial pilot, with the training due to become available free of charge through CITB next year.

Protecting hearing matters. But so does making sure those already affected can work safely, communicate confidently and build successful careers in construction.

Skills England has warned that, for construction, the education pipeline alone will not be enough to meet future demand.

That matters.

Because the answer cannot just be “bring more people into the industry”.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

Experienced workers need clear routes to progress, gain recognised qualifications and move into the roles construction is going to need more of.

That is where NVQs have an important role to play.

They give experienced workers the opportunity to have the skills and competence they already use on site formally recognised, while helping them progress into the next stage of their career.

The industry already has a huge amount of experience in its workforce.

The challenge is making sure we develop and recognise it, rather than overlooking it while searching for the next generation.
