Commonwealth Games πŸ₯ˆ | "It's a very emotional moment. I've been doing this for 7 years and the Commonwealth Games have always been something I wanted to go to and get a medal at!"

The 2026 Commonwealth Games took place in Glasgow this summer, and current student-athlete and Greenaway sport scholar Isabella Brown competed for England in the Women's 77kg Weightlifting on the sixth day of the games.

After lifting 97kg in the Sn**ch – the first of two parts of the competition - Bella sat just outside the medal places in 4th. However, a monumental effort in the Clean and Jerk saw the BA History student lift 132kg to set a brand new games record and move her up to 2nd place in the standings, with a final total of 229kg earning Bella a superb silver medal on her Commonwealth Games debut! πŸ₯ˆ

After returning from the games, we spoke to Bella about her achievement and time at the University of Nottingham as a dual carer athlete πŸ‘

Commonwealth Games πŸ† | Alongside the success of our Nottingham linked athletes, a number of University of Nottingham staff played crucial roles behind the action at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

During the games, Matthew Nicholson, Head of Performance Integration at the University of Nottingham, and Dr. Andrew Butterworth, the university's Head of Applied Performance & Associate Professor in Sport Performance, supported teams and elite athletes throughout the Games with advanced performance reports, analysis and insight.

πŸ’¬ "Watching people I knew and had worked with over a number of years competing at the highest level gave me a real sense of pride in the role that Nottingham can play in supporting athletes throughout their sporting journey."

ℹ️ We caught up with both of them recently to find out more about their roles, as well as the experience of working 'behind the scenes' at the prestigious sporting event this summer, and you can read our full conversation here; nottingham.ac.uk/sport/news πŸ”—

Red Roses x UoN Sport πŸ‰ | We were proud to welcome England Rugby's Red Roses to the University of Nottingham for part of their preparations ahead of a big set of fixtures this month. Using our world-class sports and rehabilitation facilities at David Ross Sports Village, the squad brought the highest level of rugby right onto campus πŸ”₯

During the camp, we spoke to our Women's Rugby head coach Tim Westwood as well as 25/26 club president and 26/27 Student's Union VP Sport Jasmine Murray about the impact of having the reigning World Champions on campus.

πŸ’¬ "If you can see it, you can be it. It's so inspiring to see players of that standard in our facilities and around campus."
