Cars are involved in a huge proportion of work related journeys whether that is company vehicles pool cars or grey fleet vehicles used for work
The hazards car drivers face often develop quickly and close particularly in busy urban environments on commuter routes and at complex junctions

๐Ÿ‘€ Safe driving relies on drivers continuously scanning for cues that a hazard may be developing including

movement at junctions and side roads
pedestrians and cyclists emerging into view
changes in the speed or position of nearby vehicles

โš ๏ธ These situations leave very little time to recognise and respond to a developing hazard making early hazard detection crucial
That is why at Esitu Solutions we tailor hazard perception tests to the driver and the vehicle rather than using a one size fits all approach and design car specific tests based on how hazards actually unfold in real world driving including grey fleet journeys for work

๐Ÿšจ Detecting hazards early is key to preventing collisions.

Every rider thinks theyโ€™re an expert at ๐Ÿ‘€ โ€” but what about when those hazards are practically invisible to the untrained eye?

As a rider, you need to stay aware of your surroundings ๐ŸŒ and predict what could go wrong before it does.

At Esitu Solutions, we provide training for a wide range of road users ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿš›, each tailored to the individual vehicle.

Why not check out our website and find the training that best suits you?

How early would you have spotted the developing hazard from an HGV driverโ€™s perspective?

24/02/2026

๐Ÿšจ At least one road traffic collision every day involves an ambulance (Safe In The Back โ€“ aace.org.uk).

That might not sound like a lot, but from minor crashes to major incidents, every collision has consequences for patients, staff, and the public ๐Ÿ‘ฅโš ๏ธ

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve designed a hazard perception test specifically for ambulance drivers ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ‘€

The UK Hazard Perception Test, introduced in 2002, was built for learner drivers. It uses car-driver footage without mirrors and fixed scoring windows โฑ๏ธ โ€” which can disadvantage experienced drivers who identify hazards earlier than expected.

It also does not reflect the vehicle-specific risks first-response drivers face, such as different sightlines, blind spots, stopping distances, and risk profiles ๐Ÿ›‘โ†”๏ธ

Our Blue Lights Hazard Test, using real ambulance footage, aims to sharpen awareness and support safer decision-making under pressure ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿšฆ

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Road safety must include those who are responsible for everyone elseโ€™s safety.
โ“Should professional emergency service drivers be assessed using learner-driver tools?

๐Ÿš˜ On the road, hazards donโ€™t always announce themselves.

This footage, filmed from a car driverโ€™s perspective, shows a moment that could catch anyone off guard ๐Ÿ‘€

A highway maintenance vehicle suddenly stops on a roundabout โ€” no warning, no extra time to react โ›”

Situations like this highlight why drivers must stay constantly aware of their surroundings. Safe driving isnโ€™t just about following the rules of the road ๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿšฆ โ€” itโ€™s about checking mirrors, anticipating the unexpected, and making informed decisions, all while remaining calm under pressure ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ‘‰ Visit our website: www.esitusolutions.com to learn how we help train driversโ€™ hazard perception and real-world decision-making.

โš ๏ธ Awareness is often the difference between a near miss and a serious incident.

๐Ÿš› Do you know how to assess your driversโ€™ competence?

Itโ€™s simpler than you think ๐Ÿ‘‡

Ask them these four key questions:
1๏ธโƒฃ Are you legally entitled to drive your vehicle?
2๏ธโƒฃ Do you have the correct licence for your vehicle type?
3๏ธโƒฃ Are you properly certified? (e.g. CPC, ADR, specialist or plant machinery)
4๏ธโƒฃ Are you checked regularly via the DVLA or an approved provider? ๐Ÿ”

โœ… If the answer is yes, youโ€™re on the right track.

These checks form the foundation of the framework set out in our next guide:

๐Ÿ“˜ How to Assess Driver Competence: Fleet Competency Series โ€“ Guide 2

๐Ÿš— What is true driver competence?

Is it simply holding a driverโ€™s licence?
โŒ No.

Driver competence is the ability to:

1๏ธโƒฃ Recognise hazards early ๐Ÿ‘€
2๏ธโƒฃ Make safe decisions under pressure โฑ๏ธ
3๏ธโƒฃ Consistently manage risk โš ๏ธ

When you actively ensure your fleetโ€™s driver competence, youโ€™ll see:

๐Ÿ“‰ Fewer collisions
๐Ÿ’ท Reduced operational costs
โ›ฝ Improved fuel efficiency
๐ŸŒฑ Stronger ESG performance

โณ Donโ€™t wait.

Reduce collisions and improve your business now.

Itโ€™s a legal requirement to ensure the safety of your drivers.

If you fail to manage occupational road risk and driver competence, the results can be catastrophic:

1. Corporate Manslaughter fines
2. Penalties under the Health and Safety Offences Act
3. Civil Claims and Insurance Disputes
4. Serious Reputational Harm

To put it simply, it is NOT worth the risk.

Take a look at the first Guide in our Fleet Competence Series, The Hidden Cost of Fleet Collisions to learn more about the real impact of neglecting your drivers safety and how you can increase their competence.
