Local MP provides politics masterclass to Djanogly City Academy sixth formers
A Nottingham MP has shared her career insights with Djanogly City Academy sixth formers.
Nadia Whittome, the Labour MP for Nottingham East, spoke to students at Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form and took part in a question and answer session.
During her visit to the school on Sherwood Rise, Nadia discussed her educational background and how she got into politics and also toured the sixth form facilities.
Nadia has been an MP since 2019 and was previously the youngest serving one when she was first elected at the age of 23.
The visit, on 28th March 2025, was organised by the school as part of a masterclass programme where guest speakers from different professions share their career journey, insights and tips.
Andy Smith, Principal, Djanogly City Academy, said: “Our focus is on ensuring that all of our students have the chance to reach their potential regardless of their background or ability.
“To complement their academic studies, we provide our students with guidance and support to raise aspirations and enable them to pursue successful future careers.
“We were delighted to welcome our local MP Nadia Whittome to Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form to share her career insights and advice.”
Nadia Whittome MP commented: “As school visits often are, spending time with students at Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form was one of the highlights of my week.
“From asking complex questions about geopolitics to raising issues affecting their daily lives and our local community, I’m proud to represent such politically engaged and socially conscious young people.”
Student Altaja Bhatti Bhatti said: "I was inspired by Nadia's talk, particularly her account of when she was the youngest MP in the Houses of Commons and the struggles she has encountered as a person of colour."
Student Stefanija Aboltina commented: “I was impressed by the down to earth nature of our local MP who was able to relate to us by discussing local issues which concern us all.”
Djanogly City Academy is part of Djanogly Learning Trust and has more than 1,200 pupils aged 11 to 18 years-old based at two sites on Sherwood Rise and Gregory Boulevard.
Around 150 students attend Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form, which offers 20 A Level subjects, and has recently been praised as ‘outstanding’ in Ofsted’s latest inspection report published in January 2025.
The report highlights that the sixth form provides a transformative environment which enables students who might not thrive elsewhere to excel and achieve remarkable outcomes.
Ofsted’s latest report also rates the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management of Djanogly City Academy all as ‘good’.
In the latest Department for Education statistics covering the progress of Key Stage 4 students during 2023/24 published in February 2025, Djanogly City Academy Sixth Form ranks second in Nottingham.
