If you’re a year 10 student, or the parent, then this post is for you.

May/June 2026 might seem a very long way off, but as a teacher of English for over 33 years, I can tell you that the next 12 months will be the fastest of your lives.

And now it’s time to make plans.

Since January, I’ve had to turn away at least one student every week. They’ve been desperate for tuition but I simply couldn’t offer them anything as I have been fully booked since December.

If you think that you, or your child, would benefit from some extra support then please contact me now to reserve your slot.

I look forward to hearing from you.

If you’re the parent of a GCSE student, then you know that the next 6-7 months are going to be full of pressure, stress, tears and anxiety. It shouldn’t be, but sadly it is. I can’t remove all of that pressure, nor do I have a magic wand that’ll make that quadratic equation or Shakespeare’s use of language suddenly so easy. But what I can do is give your child the toolkit to help them achieve their potential in GCSE English Language and Literature.

Please visit my website, look at the reviews from both students and their parents past and present and drop me a message. One to one bespoke tuition created for your child.

New student began GCSE English Language tuition with me today. Mum texted immediate afterwards to express how positive her child was feeling.

I was contacted by this parent (and Deputy Headteacher) at the beginning of 2024. Her daughter was completely demoralised after failing to achieve her target grade in Mock GCSEs. After reviewing both Language & Literature papers, I planned a programme of support, her confidence had taken a huge knock. I’m happy to report that by the final Mock in April she had gone from Level 3 in both Lit & Lang to a 6 in Lit and a 7 in Lang. I’m confident she will be delighted with her results in August.

Fabulous review received today.
Praise is always welcome but when it’s from an esteemed colleague, it’s extra special 🥰

Are you a year 11 student? Is your child taking their GCSE examinations in Summer 2024? Have the “revision rows” started yet? Want some help?

We’re heading into the final 14 weeks before the first English Literature and English Language examinations. Make sure that this summer is not only the first time you take GCSE English Language & Literature, but also your last. A Grade 4 is the minimum level that students need to reach in English (and Mathematics) otherwise you will need to continue to study these subjects as part of your post-16 education. (Source: DfE 2019)

Examination dates are as follows:

* AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English language paper 1 exams will take place on morning of Thursday, 23 May.
* CCEA English language unit 1 will take place on the morning of Wednesday, 8 May.
* AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English literature paper 1 exams will take place on morning of Monday, 13 May.
* AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English literature paper 2 exams will take place on morning of Monday, 20 May.
* CCEA English literature paper 2 will take place on the morning of Thursday, 30 May.

How can you prepare? Obviously revise is the answer. But it’s boring I hear you say! Come and learn with me. I’m an experienced, qualified teacher of English and can offer you 1:1 online tuition for English Language and Literature, and IGCSE First and Second Language English. Previous tutees have not only achieved their target grade, but most exceeded this by at least one level.

Please look at my page for testimonials from past students, including several IGCSE. You’ll see that they not only succeeded but actually enjoyed English and had fun!

Many parents are beginning to worry about how they can support their children as they prepare for next summer’s examinations. It’s never too early to start with English Literature. Far too many students enter their final exams having only ever read the text once at school, that’s not enough!

As GCSE English literature is a closed book exam, your child really needs to know the texts well, as they won’t have the texts in the exam with them.

Encourage your child to break the reading down, so it’s not overwhelming.

E.g.: Macbeth is 5 acts- they can re- read one act a day. Similarly, A Christmas Carol is 5 chapters, they can re-read one chapter a day- as this is a little more difficult to read, they can use an audio version to support their reading. There are some great quality versions online - YouTube, BBC Bitesize etc.

If they begin now, they will avoid feeling overwhelmed in April/May.

The key is not to make revision a battle ground.

I was delighted to receive this lovely testimony from a student I taught a few years ago. Brought back some lovely memories.
