I’ve changed my mind.

I know I’ve been saying for a while now that the first thing students should do in an exam is scan the paper.

I still think it can be great advice, but it turns out it doesn’t work for everyone.

Some students instantly overwhelm themselves by looking at every question. Instead, start Question 1 and get moving.

Once your brain gets into maths mode, confidence builds and momentum takes over.
In maths, getting started is often more important than getting it perfect.

The core idea is the same:

Scanning technique - find the easiest question and get going.

‘Maths mode’ technique - Open the paper and get going straight away.

It’s all about getting the ball rolling in the GCSEs.
