GCSE EXAMS
May 10th – 18th June

All morning exams start before 9.30am.
All afternoon exams start before 1.30pm.
Exact start times may vary slightly depending on the exam centre.


For Denewood students every morning transport will be leaving NTC for Ambleside at 8.45am. Students need to be here before 8.40 or meet at Ambleside at 9am.
Students arriving after these times may not be allowed to sit their exams.

There will be normal lessons on days when there is no exam and in the afternoons when there is no afternoon exam. Students are expected to attend.

Parents
It is parents’ responsibility to make sure your child gets to the exam on time.
If your child is ill you must tell us immediately and you may be required to get a doctor’s certification.
If your child misses their exam for reasons other than certified illness you may be required to pay their exam fees. Please call the office immediately if you have any questions.

This letter contains important health information

I am writing to inform you that the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA East Midlands Health Protection team) has identified an increase in confirmed or suspected cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in school age children in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire areas.
Individual cases have been provided with advice, but we would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness regarding vaccination and symptoms of whooping cough to be aware of.

Symptoms
Whooping cough is caused by infection with pertussis bacteria. For most school-age patients, symptoms will resolve over a number of weeks, while for some, coughing can persist for a few months.

The symptoms of pertussis include:

• a cough lasting several weeks following initial cold-like symptoms
• prolonged bouts of coughing (‘paroxysms’)
• post-coughing retching or vomiting
• a ‘whoop’ sound on breathing in
• rib pain

Untreated pertussis is no longer infectious after 21 days but with appropriate antibiotic treatment this reduces to 48 hours.

Advice for parents or guardians
If your child has any of the symptoms described above, we advise you seek medical advice from a GP and take along this letter.

Your GP may then arrange testing for whooping cough.

Your GP can also prescribe antibiotics without waiting for test results. Antibiotics are not required if there has been more than 21 days of coughing. Whooping cough is no longer infectious from 48 hours of starting appropriate antibiotics, but your child should stay isolated at home until they have had 48 hours of antibiotic treatment.

Whooping cough is spread through respiratory droplets: coughing into tissues and washing hands with soap and water can reduce spread.

If your child missed any of their infant or pre-school vaccines, we recommend that you arrange catch-up vaccination through your GP practice as soon as possible. If your child is up to date with their pertussis vaccination, we do not advise any further boosters.

It is still possible for fully vaccinated children to develop whooping cough (although the illness is generally milder) so if your child develops symptoms they should be taken to the GP for advice.

At-risk groups
Whooping cough is of most concern in unimmunised infants when it can be life threatening. Vaccinations to prevent whooping cough are routinely given to infants, pre-school children, and pregnant women.

We recommend all pregnant women get their routine vaccination against pertussis ideally between weeks 20 and 32 of pregnancy (but can be given from 16 weeks and up until labour if needed) in order to protect their baby.

Those in risk groups or with regular contact with persons in a risk group should consider avoiding events where they may come into contact with those unwell with pertussis.

Nottinghamshire Police and the Youth Outreach Team have partnered with the National Ice Stadium to provide an exciting 10 week programme for young people! 😊

The programme will start on Friday the 12th of January and takes place every Friday until the 15th of March 2024 between 6pm and 9pm.

Vacancy for maths teacher for September, or possibly earlier.
As a progressive approved provider we are always looking for high quality staff to add to our team of tutors. Right now we have a vacancy for a fully qualified teacher of mathematics within our main building on Pelham Road.
Our students may have experienced difficulties elsewhere in education, but we offer them a fresh start in small groups led by empathetic and skilled teachers. Predominantly aimed at students taking GSCEs in Key Stage 4, we do occasionally have some KS3 students too.
You will join a supportive team of experienced specialist teachers.

Employability skills gained with His Majesty’s Revenue Customs HMRC

Employment and further education can be a daunting prospect for any young person in the normal education system. Spare a thought for those young people having either left or been failed by a state education system and then they found themselves in an Alternative Provision educational setting.
AP’s working in conjunction with HMRC providing a range of experts and guest speakers, looking at different parts of their business portfolio, then offering employability skills and advice on how to succeed in an interview situation for prospective employment with the Civil Service. How to work in a team to overcome a challenge in a real-life scenario with the ability to work outside of their comfort zone to present information to a panel of experts. Students were assigned a mentor to offer support to individuals.
Three young ambassadors from NTC Alternative Provision found themselves in a final selection group, able to attend a few days at HMRC over the past academic year. They had access to TEAMS mentor presentations. The information and skills helped to give the students the abilities to make an interactive team presentation, whilst competing against other AP students in a Dragon’s Den style process.
The photograph shows the students attending a work experience day at HMRC in May 2023, preparing for their big team presentation to a mixed board of senior personnel, before they leave school at the end of June 2023.

Message from Nottinghamshire Police:

After the awful events in Nottingham City Centre yesterday, there may be some pupils, especially from the BME community that are feeling nervous and anxious about repercussions to them and their families as speculation around the suspect circulates on social media

It is important to stress to pupils and staff that this was an act of a lone person and at this time, there are no indicators that this was an attack that was committed due to ethnicity, immigration status, religion or ideology.

Please also reinforce to students that there is a lot of speculation on social media and the news regarding the suspect and this information is often false to generate a backlash.

Your School and Early Intervention Officer (SEIO) is available if any pupils, particularly from the BME community, wish to speak to them about the matter, and will be able to offer support and to identify and report back for the community impact assessment any issues and concerns they have.
