A 16-year-old South African student, Bohlale Mphahlele, has invented a smart safety earring-style device that could transform personal security by discreetly helping victims of attacks.
Her creation, known as the Alerting Earpiece, looks like ordinary jewellery but includes a hidden button that quietly photographs attackers and sends real-time GPS location and distress alerts to emergency contacts and police.
The idea was born out of South Africa’s alarmingly high rates of gender-based violence, motivating her to build a practical tool that works even when a victim can’t call for help.
The earpiece technology not only aids in quicker response times but can also provide crucial evidence for legal action by capturing images of perpetrators.
Mphahlele’s innovation has already earned recognition at science expos and has drawn praise as a powerful example of youth-driven solutions to pressing social problems.
