One thing I’ve always loved about Britain is how the modern world co-exists with the ‘old’ world. And nowhere is starker than in the City of London - the original ‘square mile’ of London settled by the Romans. Here you see the iconic Gherkin, in the shadow of St Andrew Undershaft, one of the oldest churches in London - dating back to the 12th century and one of the few survivors of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the London Blitz. Taken in 2006, this picture shows that contrast - an embrace of modernity, but also the reverence for the past that I really appreciate about Britain. I hail from Chicago, and most of Chicago’s history has been swept away in the name of progress and modernity.
