In the Winter of 1554, Edinburgh at night was a dangerous place to be🌚

The Burgh Council issued a regulation ‘for eschewing of evil doings of various vagabonds and others' which meant those who lived and worked in the closes of the Old Town had to make sure a lantern was lit outside their property🕯

Can you imagine wandering the closes at night with only small lanterns to help guide you?

Subterranean exploring.

One thing I’ve always loved about Britain is how the modern world co-exists with the ‘old’ world. And nowhere is starker than in the City of London - the original ‘square mile’ of London settled by the Romans. Here you see the iconic Gherkin, in the shadow of St Andrew Undershaft, one of the oldest churches in London - dating back to the 12th century and one of the few survivors of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the London Blitz. Taken in 2006, this picture shows that contrast - an embrace of modernity, but also the reverence for the past that I really appreciate about Britain. I hail from Chicago, and most of Chicago’s history has been swept away in the name of progress and modernity.

About this series: In less than 100 days, I will depart for Britain for the first time in almost four years. I’m very excited about this.
