Is your child moving into Years 8, 9 or 10 this September?

Strong writing skills are essential for success across all secondary school subjects and become increasingly important as students prepare for GCSEs.

To help students develop confidence and improve their writing, I will be offering a Creative Writing Course specifically designed for Years 8–10.

During the course, students will explore:

• Using ambitious and effective vocabulary
• Planning and structuring their writing clearly
• Developing engaging characters, settings and ideas
• Writing for different purposes and audiences
• Editing and improving their work independently
• Building confidence in expressing their thoughts and opinions

The course provides a supportive environment where students can develop their creativity while strengthening the writing skills needed across the curriculum.

Is your child heading into Year 6 this September?

As children move into upper Key Stage 2, writing becomes more demanding and plays a key role in their overall academic success. To support this important transition, we are offering a Creative Writing Course designed specifically for children entering Year 6 next academic year.

This course focuses on building strong, transferable writing skills in a supportive and nurturing environment. Children will explore:

• Effective and ambitious vocabulary choices
• How to plan their writing in a clear, structured way
• Guided writing activities to develop ideas and technique
• Editing and improving their own work with confidence

The aim is to help each child produce well-structured, engaging pieces of writing while also strengthening their confidence and enjoyment in the process.

By the end of the course, children will not only understand how to improve their writing, but will feel more confident in expressing their ideas independently.

We will also be offering a similar course from Year 8 to Year 10 pupils, so watch out for this!

Yesterday, we had another wonderful meeting filled with positive energy, genuine connections and some fantastic referrals.
We were also lucky to welcome some really interesting visitors, who brought their unique businesses and fresh perspectives into the room.
A special mention to Clair Abrey - Virtual Assistant, who gave a heartfelt and fascinating presentation about herself and her business. It was lovely to learn more about her journey and passion.
I was delighted to have the opportunity to present on Get Ahead Tuition Norfolk, our exciting new venture dedicated to helping young children across Norfolk. It is a project we are incredibly passionate about, and I look forward to seeing the difference it can make.
One of the things I value most about these meetings is reconnecting with our fellow members each month and hearing how their businesses are growing and evolving. There is always something new to learn and celebrate.
We missed Sue Potter and hope to see her back with us soon, but a huge thank you to our host, Gemma Crane Crane, who did a fabulous job guiding the meeting and keeping everything running smoothly.

This is the third in a series of posts providing tips on descriptive writing. The first two were:

WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW

USE YOUR IMAGINATION

TIP #3: MOVE THE LENS
The student should imagine they are looking through the lens of a camera, and writing down what they see. A mistake students make is thinking that their writing is on one, static scene. No, you can move your camera about, up or down, to the side and zooming in.

I've previously given the example of a forest, the subject of a past writing task on a AQA English Language Paper 1. You could begin by looking at the forest as a whole, in the distance, then, enter the forest, look at the canopy overhead and focus in on a particular animal, like a bird or squirrel.

The student is not telling a story (that's narrative writing) but is like a film director. As a teacher, it is tremendously helpful to use short sections of a film or TV drama to demonstrate to students the different shots that are used to establish and explore locations.

At Get Ahead Tuition Norfolk, we know that confidence and individual support can make all the difference when it comes to creative writing.

This Summer, we are offering tailored 1:1 Creative Writing Sessions designed to support children through key educational transitions, from Year 5 to Year 6, and from Year 9 to Year 10 (or from Year 8, if your child begins GCSEs in Year 9).

Last week, we began a series of posts on tips to help students with descriptive writing. One half of the AQA GCSE English Language is on creative writing. Students can either choose narrative writing or descriptive writing. We'll address narrative writing at a later date. We have come across a lot of students who find this task very difficult, and these tips are aimed at them and their teachers.

Our first tip was WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. Essentially, children should choose a location they are familiar with and draw upon. Please see the previous post for more details.

TIP #2: use your imagination

Just because a student draws on their experience, the writing does NOT have to be factual. Some students seem to believe they need to be. Not at all! Any creative writer mixes up their own memories with their imagination. On writing a description of a forest, a title from a previous paper, students may have been in one but they can change and transform their own memory into anything, as long as they remain in a forest. The trees could be blue, they could even move, talk, or Robin Hood's merry men could be discovered within.
