Rain Cloud in a Glass🌧💙

As the weather starts to turn, we started investigating about clouds!
We set up a simple experiment to visually see how rain comes from a cloud.
This science activity shows us how our clouds work and what can happen when it rains. It also promotes fine motor skills, taking in turns and so much curiosity!

Today is Read a Book Day! 📚
Books are a huge part of our nursery curriculum here at Orchidale, and we love sharing our passion for reading with our children and families.
Our lending library is well stocked with a lovely range of storybooks to enjoy at home, including some autumn-themed stories perfect for this time of year.
You’ll also find some brown bags in the lending library for an autumn treasure hunt .Please feel free to share your autumn treasure hunt with us on Tapestry — we’d love to see what you find!
There is no deadline to return books; we simply ask that once you have finished, you bring them back so another family can enjoy them too.

Over group time some children found a snail and so we went into the growing garden to create a mini habitat with a range of natural resources inside an observation pot. They added damp compost, leaves, a stick and small stones. Then they found a second one so added it in too!

We could see the snails glide along and we could even see the muscular foot sticking to the plastic. Everyone wanted to take the snails home so instead we used our camera and they took their own photo of them.

In Science Club, the children explored how rockets launch by making their very own pop rockets. They carefully poured in the ingredients, placed the rockets down, stepped back safely, and watched them shoot into the air, leaving a lovely colourful trail behind! 🌈

This exciting activity supported lots of wonderful early learning, including curiosity, problem-solving, observing changes, and talking about what happened. At Orchidale we love giving children hands-on opportunities to investigate, predict, test ideas and have fun while learning. 💡✨

We’ve had a lovely morning on the garden tending to the plants, harvesting and watering , but we also had an important job to do: planting our winter sprouts!

We looked at the little seedlings and the small root clusters, filled up pots of compost and then individually planted them. The children topped them up with a bit more compost to make sure they were safe and snug then watered them. We can’t wait to see them grow!

We also noticed that the potatoes had grown lots and we compared them to the height of the children! There was also a mysterious mud patch under a veg crate and we wondered what could have caused the mud to be pushed up?! The children guessed it could be a mole coming to see the garden at night!

There’s definitely a change in the weather, and autumn is starting to make an appearance
It all began with one small acorn, proudly shared by one of the children, which sparked lots of curiosity and conversation. Together, we talked about the changing seasons, looked through a nature book, and explored why leaves change colour and why autumn brings so many wonderful treasures to discover.
Very soon, you’ll find some autumn treasure hunt bags in our lending library for families to take home and enjoy. We’d love you to head out together, see what seasonal treasures you can find, and share your discoveries with us!

The time has come to say Goodbye to our 2026 school leavers! It has been an absolute pleasure to have been a part of your littles ones journeys.
We want to thank all of our families for their kindness and appreciation towards us and nothing goes unoticed.
