As the summer term is coming to its end this week at the University of East Anglia, I just wanted to reflect on what an incredible teaching experience course was to be part of the UEA Languages Programme School this year for the Greek course.

Over the last few months, watching everyone go from grappling with the Greek alphabet to confidently holding basic conversations has been an absolute privilege.

Teaching on the main campus is always a joy, but it’s especially rewarding to guide adult learners and leisure students as they unlock a new language and culture.

Special thanks to our programme lead, Claire Cuminatto, and the whole ULP team that have been there to support me and the students!

Have a wonderful break everyone, and I look forward to seeing you this Autumn!

There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think?

Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian that suggest the answer is a resounding yes.

"The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000."

Why Greek?

Greek is one of the official languages of the EU and is spoken by about 11 million people in Greece, Cyprus, and in various communities throughout the world. 🌍

By the end of the course, you will be able to deal with a variety of basic tasks such as ordering food, socialising, and shopping.
You will be able to read and write using the Greek alphabet! 🇬🇷
