At Chestnut Nursery School Taverham, the pre-school children have been exploring the beach! 🌴🪸

We turned one of our rooms into a beach, laying sand on to the floor. The children have spent a lot of time exploring the beach, making patterns with shells, digging with one handed tools, and splashing in the sea. We have had our own ice cream van at our beach too and this has proven to be quite a hit with the customers, especially blueberry flavour.

We have been talking about staying safe at the beach and discovering who can save us if we are in trouble. We have been practicing saving each other in the pretend water to support our lifesaving skills.

The children have had the best time exploring the beach!

This week at Chestnut Nursery School Taverham, the babies attended Thurne Carnival! After hearing from some of our families about the local carnival, we wanted to bring this exciting experience to everyone. The garden was full of fun activities for the children to engage with. We had an ice-cream stand, circus arena and music area to explore. We came together to sing songs, we even had a try at hula hooping. We had such a lovely time!

At Chestnut Nursery School Sewell Park, the children in the Potter Room have been exploring a range of different Pirate activities based around our book of the moment ‘The Place called Pirates’. Our little pirates enjoyed developing their fine motor skills through drawing maps and creating their own pirate hat. They extended their mathematical knowledge by creating patterns and exploring quantities and used a range of materials to build a bridge for the pirates.

📚✨ Bringing Books to Life at Chestnut Nursery School The Diamond Centre! ✨📚

We believe it’s so important for children to be surrounded by books and print from an early age - even before they are learning to read independently. Books support language development, imagination, communication and a love of learning. ❤️

At Chestnut Nursery Schools, we plan lots of our monthly activities around the theme of a chosen book, giving the children opportunities to explore stories in lots of different ways.

Throughout July, we enjoyed 'The Colour Monster Goes to School', which was the perfect story to support our children as they prepare for their next big adventure.

Our activities included:
🎨 Making our own Colour Monsters
🪵 Creating Stick Man Colour Monsters
💭 Talking about and exploring different emotions
🎒 Discussing what it means to transition to big school and the things we might experience
😊 Sharing our own feelings and talking about ways we can manage them

We’ve also given our outside reading area a little revamp! 🌿📚 We’ve made the books more accessible and created cosy little nooks where children can snuggle down, get comfortable and enjoy a story. It has already been a huge success, with the children choosing to spend lots of time independently exploring the books.

And finally, we welcomed our brand-new ‘Reading Throne’! 👑📖 This has been a huge hit, with lots of children taking on the role of teacher, choosing a story and sharing it with their friends. It has been fantastic to see their confidence, communication and imagination shine as they bring stories to life.

We love creating opportunities for children to develop a lifelong love of books, stories and reading - and seeing them enjoy books in so many different ways has been wonderful! ❤️📚✨

🌈 Exploring Our Senses in Opal Room! 🌈 Our under-twos at Chestnut Nursery School The Diamond Centre have had a wonderful time exploring their senses over the past month! 👶✨

We have been providing lots of exciting, hands-on experiences to encourage our little ones to explore, investigate and learn through play.

Gloop and paint have allowed the children to explore different textures, temperatures and consistencies, while also encouraging curiosity and creativity. These messy activities help develop their sensory awareness and give children the freedom to investigate using their hands and fingers.

Peeling tape has been a great way to support those important fine motor skills. The children have been using their fingers to grip, pull and peel, helping to strengthen the small muscles in their hands and develop hand-eye coordination — skills that will support them with future tasks such as using cutlery, drawing and mark-making.

Mirrors have encouraged the children to recognise faces, explore their own reflections and develop early self-awareness. They have also been fascinated watching their movements and expressions!

Balls and different objects have encouraged reaching, grasping, rolling and tracking, helping to develop both their gross and fine motor skills, coordination and understanding of cause and effect.

Most importantly, the children have been having lots of fun while learning! At this age, every touch, movement, sound and discovery is helping to build their understanding of the world around them and develop those important early skills. 🌟

It's healthy eating week in Chestnut Nursery School Taverham. The children have been enjoying making healthy pizzas. We spoke about what foods we put on pizzas and whether they are healthy or unhealthy choices. The children were able to safely use the knives to cut their own healthy toppings to put onto their pizzas.

Throughout the month of August, the children in the Thurne Room at Chestnut Nursery School Taverham have been focusing on the story 'Superworm'. We have enjoyed exploring a range of creative and hands-on activities inspired by the story. The children painted cardboard tubes to create their very own Superworms and then used them to practice their threading skills by threading the tubes onto skipping ropes.

In our Little Explorers Garden, the children have been learning about how plants grow. They enjoyed helping to water the plants and observing the changes taking place in the garden. We also explored the world of minibeasts by designing and creating our own bug hotels using a variety of natural materials.

Another activity the children particularly enjoyed was searching for worms in the soil. This provided wonderful opportunities for the children to explore nature, develop their curiosity and talk about the different creatures they discovered.
