During Forest School we harvested some of our hazel to use as green wood for whittling. 1:1 tool use is an exciting part of our forest school (and fully risk assessed). One of the pupils said, "I feel really proud of myself and my whittling."

Some of our Eco Council learned about composting this week before clearing our raised beds and preparing them for planting in. Green materials break down quickly, such as food peelings, tea bags, grass cuttings and weeds. Brown materials include sticks, cardboard and dried leaves, which create air flow and structure. A compost heap needs a mix of brown and green materials. Our Eco councillors worked really hard and were also excited to find lots of juicy worms!

Our Eco Council have been very busy improving our school pond at St Michael's Junior School. They started with some research to find out how to improve and look after our pond. We discovered that we needed to carefully rake out some of the leaf litter that has built up in the pond and increase the path / margin around the pond to let the light in. Our Eco council have also cleared the path of deadwood, used loppers to harvest some green wood and increased the pond margin. They have also set up a composter ready for the leaf litter. Following all their hard work they enjoyed a hot chocolate around a fire in the jubilee cottage.
