On Wednesday I want to GLEE in Birmingham where I met so many wonderful people in the gardening world. I learnt what challenges people in this industry were facing but more importantly all the amazing opportunities there were in the horticultural world.

I attended a fascinating talk hosted by Andrew Fitzmaurice from MorePeople on people, pay and perspectives in horticulture. Martin Ward from GIMA (Garden Industry Manufacturers’​ Association) said that there was a gap in mental health and wellbeing and that this is an area that needs addressing. Emma Poulton was so passionate about her staff and investing in their people, going beyond compliance so that they keep hold of good people. I was particularly impressed with Henry Pleasance from Skylark Garden Centre, Cafe, Events & Lakes, who held such a positive and upbeat attitude towards his work.

It was great to see Victoria Osborne and L V Bespoke stand and all their incredible new products, putting Norfolk on the map.

When you’re responsible for the business, the team and the decisions, it’s easy to forget to come up for air.

Sometimes you are so knee-deep in your own thoughts, you end up doing your job on autopilot.

There is always something that needs your attention.
Expectations are high.
Decisions need to be made.
Your team are looking to you for answers, direction and reassurance.

And before you know it, you’re moving from one thing to the next without ever really coming up for air.

It can be demanding, consuming and, at times, suffocating.

But sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause. Step back. Take stock.

Create some space between you and the noise. Because when we are too attached to the problem, the decision or the day-to-day, it can be difficult to see things clearly.

Space gives us perspective.
Space to think.
Space to breathe.
Space to make clear decisions.

And sometimes, stepping away for a moment isn't stepping back from your responsibilities.
It’s what allows you to come back to them with a clearer head.

Nobody warns you that summer holidays on a farm means running the house, the kids, and everything else, single handedly.

I chose this life. I was a farmer’s daughter before I was a farmer’s wife, so I knew exactly what I was signing up for. That doesn’t make it easy. It’s demanding, long hours, and lonely at times, holding everything together while your husbands out working, shattered by the time he’s home, and still needing to be the friendly face at the end of the day when you’re genuinely at your wit’s end yourself.

This isn’t a dig. It’s just true, and I think it deserves saying out loud occasionally.

So much of what keeps a farm running happens behind the scenes and goes completely unnoticed. The wives, partners and mothers who are the backbone of it all, holding the house and everyone in it together while the season takes everything else. Not for the faint hearted. But we do it because we chose it, and because we love the people behind it.

I raise a glass to all the farmers wives out there. You are awesome 🥳. Tag someone who needs to hear this or cheer on another fellow farmers wife!

Farming rewards working hard and keeping going, and there’s real pride in that. But somewhere along the way, the ability to actually stop got lost.

I talked about this on the podcast recently, decisions made after a fourteen hour day are not the same as decisions made with a clear head. Long hours compromise judgement, every time, and huge decisions deserve better than a compromised mind at the end of them.

You can’t control the weather, the markets, or what the neighbour’s doing in the next field. You can control your own lane, your own decisions, and when you choose to stop for the day. I want my husband home. I know when enough is enough, and I think more of us need permission to say the same.

Be kind to yourself this week. Stop looking over the hedge, and stay in your own lane.

Farms aren’t simple. Land, relationships, worry, jealousy, too many opinions, all tangled together, with government policy, weather and prices piled on top. And underneath all of it, this is still a business, one that a lot of mouths are trying to draw an income from.

This isn’t a criticism of farming, its the reality. It’s an honest look at what actually gets carried underneath it, and I think it’s worth talking about properly rather than glossing over.

This is exactly the work I do, through Clearer Heads, Stronger Farms and one to one coaching, giving farmers a space to put this down and think clearly, including the succession conversations that keep getting delayed.

Yesterday was my last day at Sworders. November would have been my 10 year anniversary.

I’ve been part of 2 office moves, watched staff enrol and leave, organised some brilliant events, and helped shape the next chapter of the business as they reposition and reconnect with their brand. It wasn’t just a job, it felt like being part of a family, and I owe a huge thank you to everyone who made it that way.

Whilst there, I got married, had 2 children, bred 4 litters of puppies and built our home. So it’s been a big part of my life.

It was a bittersweet day, but it feels right to hang up my boots and move on. I’m fully focusing on my coaching and training business now, with some exciting projects and collaborations in the pipeline.

I help agriculture build stronger people and stronger businesses, putting the focus back on the people and naming the issues quietly building before they turn into something bigger. Farming is turbulent right now, and I want to help shape a future that’s profitable and sustainable, built on stronger people.

As well as coaching, I’m continuing my MindSpan consultancy work, running The Synergy Circle, and keeping busy with my 2 children and our energetic Labrador puppy. So I won’t be twiddling my thumbs!

We invest in machinery without hesitation. Servicing, maintenance, upgrades, none of it gets questioned.

The person running that machinery gets a very different message. Man up. Crack on. Get on with it. Nobody’s asking how they’re sleeping, whether they’re eating properly, what their mindset actually is by week six of a hard season.

That has to change, and it starts with something simple: empathy, and actually asking the question. Not “you alright?” in passing, but genuinely asking, and waiting for the real answer. Humans want to feel heard, listened to and valued, farmers are no different, we just don’t ask often enough.

Poor yields. Drought. Bluetongue. Read the headlines this week and it’s hard not to feel the weight of it all landing at once.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, I want you to know that’s not weakness, it’s an entirely reasonable response to an unreasonable amount of pressure.

Seeking help isn’t the thing that breaks the streak of good decisions, it’s usually what protects it.
