Norwich History Festival is back for its second year, celebrating the rich and vibrant history of Norwich and beyond. This year’s theme of “Why History Matters” seeks to explore the importance of history in modern society. With an exciting lineup of 34 talks, 30 walks, and a series of other events across the city from 14 to 24 July, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee with Charlie Higson

Since 2023 Charlie Higson has hosted a weekly history podcast about the British monarchy called Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee, and a companion book of the series was published last October. This event will find out how he has got enthused with history and will also explore Charlie's own history with the city of Norwich.

Broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham visited UEA this week for an event held to celebrate 100 years of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. When asked for one thing on campus that students shouldn’t miss, Chris spoke about the importance of taking time to connect with nature.

He said: “They shouldn’t miss taking some time out from their busy schedules, whether that’s socialising or studying, to come out here and just sit in nature.

“You’re very fortunate to have spaces like this. Even this little glade here, with these mature pine trees and birds singing, it’s a place where you can properly take a break.

“We know that being in nature, being in green spaces, and listening to birdsong is a great way of inducing calm and reducing anxiety. So just take ten minutes a day to come out here and soak it up. Do a little bit of forest bathing. You’ll go back into your lectures in a better frame of mind and in a better place to make progress.”

Total Value: £9,000. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

The Jack Speller Scholarship is available to a UK home fees applicant who has applied for a place on any undergraduate course with a start date of September 2026. Preference will be given to those who have applied on the Environmental Science course.

The scholarship is awarded to any applicant who shows genuine financial need, academic potential and a clear idea on their future aspirations.

To be considered for this scholarship, an application form is required. The deadline for applications is Friday 1st May 2026.
