A different kind of screen time ๐ŸŒฟ

The children used the Seek app to investigate plants and insects found in the woodland, before adding their discoveries to their nature journal.

Technology didnโ€™t replace the experience. It helped them ask more questions about what was right in front of them.

Water tray play in the woods. ๐Ÿ’ง

Fill a tray with water, hand the children a few syringes, colanders and funnels, and it will elevate the play and add some fun splashes.

We added a mix of natural objects too so they could test what floats and what sinks. Sticks, stones, leaves, seed pods. Some surprised them.

If you want to try it at home, a washing up bowl in the garden is all you need. The tools are the bit that really extends it.

Fancy a round of lemon tea? ๐Ÿ‹

Adding real fruit and flowers to the mud kitchen changes everything.
Suddenly there are colours to mix, smells to notice, textures that are completely different to mud and water on their own.

Lemons, berries, rose petals, anything thatโ€™s in season works. The children slice, squeeze, stir and serve. The roleplay takes off on its own from there.

Itโ€™s a good way to keep outdoor play feeling fresh through spring and summer without adding much at all.

Dip dyed eggs in the woods. ๐Ÿฅš

One of our favourite woodland spring activities. We mixed food dye with water, dipped the eggs, watched the colours bleed and change, and talked about what was happening. Shades mixed and lovely patterns appeared. No two eggs came out the same.

The children pressed leaves onto the eggs before dipping them so that when they lifted the leaf away the shapes stayed behind, pale against the colour.

Nature-based early years learning doesnโ€™t have to be complicated to be worthwhile.

Very important leaf identification in progress. ๐Ÿƒ

We laid out nature ID sheets for leaves and flowers, gave the children pens and pencils, and let them work through it at their own pace. Matching what they could see in front of them to what was on the page, then having a go at drawing their own.

Plenty of pencil control happening, lots of close looking. Neither of which required a table, a chair, or being told to sit still.

For little ones who love to be outsideโ€ฆ

Weโ€™ve got a really lovely Easter session planned with woodland egg hunts, mud kitchen play, planting to take home, nature crafts, stories by the fire and, of course, hot cross buns to finish.

Itโ€™s the kind of morning where your children can explore, make, get stuck in and enjoy being out in nature.

The Wednesday session has already sold out and there are only 5 spaces left for Friday!

If youโ€™re thinking about joining us, I wouldnโ€™t wait too long:
