Improving literacy, we empower voices (6-16yrs) with our intelligent knowledge-rich curricula at home

18/06/2026

We were delighted to join the Year 7 & 8 Futures Fair at Town Close School this afternoon.

As technology and AI continue to reshape the world of work, it was fantastic to speak with students about careers in educational technology and what it's like to work for a purpose-driven company focused on improving literacy outcomes for young people.

The jobs our students do in the future may not even exist today, but strong communication, literacy and problem-solving skills will always matter.

Thank you to everyone at Town Close School for having us - we loved meeting such curious, thoughtful and engaged students.

If 'reading for pleasure' is your headline goal, you can end up chasing a feeling you cannot standardise.

A more useful target: build 'committed readers' - pupils who can read for utility, pleasure, and fulfilment, across every subject.

Three leadership approaches that help:

1. Make vocabulary and background knowledge everybody's business (not just English)
2. Teach reading as thinking, especially with non-fiction and subject texts
3. Use data that shows where reading breaks down, so support is targeted

If you'd like to see what that looks like in practice, book a quick demo:

Don't miss our upcoming webinar, 'Stop giving every learner the same literacy solution'.

This Thursday, Bedrock's Director of Education, Olivia Sumpter, joins Dr Tim Mills MBE - lead drafter of the DfE Writing Framework and DfE RISE Advisor - for a practical session on making better literacy decisions across your school.

Too often, intervention continues long after decoding and fluency are secure - while the real challenge is access to the academic language that shapes the curriculum.

That creates two problems:

- Some pupils receive support they no longer need
- Others never develop the language needed to succeed across subjects

In this live session, you'll learn:

- How to use reading data to identify the real barrier
- When intervention should stop
- What learners need next to access the curriculum successfully

Many schools cannot answer this question with confidence:

Are we using the right intervention with the right pupils - and stopping it at the right time?

That creates two risks:

1. Pupils receive intervention they no longer need
2. Other pupils never develop the language needed to master the curriculum

The result is not just inefficiency.

It is weaker outcomes at KS2 and GCSE.

Students cannot access the curriculum without the language that shapes it.

Once decoding and fluency are secure, the priority changes.

Not more intervention.

But explicit, quality-first teaching of academic language, knowledge, and disciplinary reading across subjects.

We’re running a short session for school leaders to walk through:

- How to use reading data to identify the real barrier
- When intervention should stop
- What all learners need next

With Dr Tim Mills MBE, lead drafter of the DfE Writing Framework and DfE RISE Advisor.

Subject literacy is not an 'English problem'.

If pupils struggle with English, science, history, or geography content, language is often the barrier (vocabulary, dense explanations, academic phrasing).

Bedrock supports subject literacy across the curriculum, with low admin.
