Fund more British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters in the emergency services

Created by Elizabeth Andrea Corbett
Closes on 20 July 2026

Fund more BSL interpreting services to ensure they continue throughout emergencies from start until finish. As it stands interpretation from BSL 999 ends when emergency services is dispatched, but there is often no interpreter during the emergency.

We want to ensure deaf people have equal access to emergency services without communication barriers and ensure the Equality Act 2010 and BSL Act 2022 are upheld.

Research has shown that many deaf people are dying young or have complex healthcare due to barriers. We want to prevent healthcare inequalities among the deaf community.

Learn the British Sign Language (BSL) signs for ALL 48 countries competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In BSL, some countries may not have widely recognised signs and therefore fingerspelling can be used to remove any ambiguity. Where there isn’t an established sign for a country, it’s common practice to use the International Sign (IS). The IS sign often adopts the sign used by that country’s native Deaf population. Some BSL signs (as you might notice) reflect external stereotypes of a country which are visually descriptive.

Languages naturally evolve and in BSL, many countries have variations of signs. For this video, we’ve opted to demonstrate just one sign per country. It’s worth keeping in mind that countries such as Spain, the USA and Canada do have variations. If you know any different signs, please share them in the comments.
