I dreamt of this day for as long as I can remember.

I never imagined back then that horses would become such a meaningful part of my life’s work. That one day, I’d be helping others find connection, safety, and healing through the very animals that gave me so much growing up.

But what I never could have imagined was just how much this particular horse would teach me.

Our relationship has taken over two years to build. Two years of learning, unlearning, listening, and finding our way together. I had to let go of so much of what I thought I knew about horses, while he had to learn that he could trust me.

He didn’t need me to be the leader I thought I should be. He needed me to become the leader he could trust.

And in so many ways, he shaped me into exactly that.

He taught me that trust cannot be demanded, connection cannot be forced, and leadership has far more to do with who we are than what we do.

Some dreams don’t leave us. They wait patiently until we’re ready to live them.

And sometimes, the little girl inside us finally gets everything she ever wished for, only to discover that the greatest gift wasn’t having a horse of her own.

It was who she would become because of him. 🤎

🐴 Help Us Bring Jasper Home! 🤍

Meet Jasper, a beautiful Quarter Horse in California who could have a very special future in our equine-assisted therapy programme.

We’re raising $15,000 to purchase Jasper, relocate him and give him a wonderful home where he could become a valued therapy partner.

Horses like Jasper have the potential to make a profound difference in the lives of people experiencing trauma, anxiety and emotional challenges.

We’re looking for individuals and businesses willing to donate or sponsor Jasper’s journey.

Every dollar brings us closer to giving Jasper a new home and more people the opportunity to experience the power of connection with horses.

🤍 Could you help us make this happen? Please message me to donate or discuss sponsorship.

Living with intention, I’m slowly learning, isn’t just about creating the life we want. It’s about becoming conscious of how we’re living the one we already have.

Noticing the patterns we fall into, the thoughts we entertain, the things we give our energy to, and the ways we sometimes stand in our own way.

It’s about recognizing that we have a choice. Not always in what happens to us, but in how we respond, what we carry forward, and what we choose to leave behind.

And perhaps that’s where real change begins. In those small, everyday moments when we catch ourselves slipping into old ways of being and consciously choose something different.

Because living intentionally isn’t just about where we’re going. It’s about who we’re choosing to be along the way. ❤️

Now if you’d excuse me… I have a coffee and a National Geographic (that I had to order in from the USA because I couldn’t get this copy in the UK!) to read now 🐴☕️

There is something deeply spiritual about working alongside horses. Something I don’t think I’ll ever quite find the words to explain. ❤️

These two boys have an extraordinary way of connecting with what’s happening in the moment.

Sometimes, during a therapy session, a client will have a moment of discovery. Something shifts. An emotion surfaces. A little piece of themselves becomes understood. And almost as if they’ve been invited, the horses arrive.

They could be grazing at the opposite end of the field, completely absorbed in their own world. Yet they’ll lift their heads, wander over and quietly join us.

And they stay.

As a psychotherapist, I understand the science of attunement, nervous system regulation and nonverbal communication. Horses are incredibly sensitive to their environment and the subtle changes happening around them.

But there’s also a part of me that doesn’t need to explain everything away. Some moments feel bigger than words. Something ancient. Something instinctive. Something that reminds us that connection existed long before language.

And perhaps that’s what makes this work so sacred.

Not that horses magically heal us, but that they offer us an opportunity to experience something we so often struggle to find in human relationships.

Presence without expectation. Connection without explanation. The freedom to simply be. And sometimes, being witnessed exactly as we are, without anyone trying to change us, is where something begins to shift.

Perhaps there are some things we’re meant to feel, rather than understand. 🐴✨

Sometimes, the horse notices the shift in us before we do. 🐴

I read something recently describing ADHD as essentially an “immature brain” that children will eventually grow out of.

And I thought… seriously? Are we still doing this?

Children with ADHD don’t simply grow out of ADHD.

What many of them get very, very good at is masking.

They learn to sit still when every part of them wants to move.

They learn to look attentive when their attention has already disappeared.

They learn which parts of themselves are considered “too much.”

They learn to suppress, compensate, people-please and work twice as hard to meet expectations designed around a different kind of nervous system.

And sometimes, from the outside, that looks like they’ve “grown out of it.”

I work therapeutically with children and young people with ADHD, and one of the reasons I love bringing horses into this work is that we can stop demanding attention and start becoming curious about what supports attention.

Because focus isn’t always about trying harder.

Sometimes it’s about movement.

Novelty.

Sensory input.

Relationship.

Emotional regulation.

Feeling safe enough in your body to actually be present.

A horse provides immediate, embodied feedback. A young person might need to notice where the horse is, what its body is communicating, how much pressure they’re using, when to move, when to stop and what changes when they change something themselves.

That is attention.

But it doesn’t necessarily look like sitting quietly at a desk and maintaining eye contact.

And that matters.

My job isn’t to teach an ADHD child how to look less ADHD.

It’s to help them understand their nervous system, discover what helps them regulate and focus, and experience relationships and environments in which they don’t have to constantly mask who they are.

Maybe we need to stop asking, “How do we get this child to pay attention?”

And start asking:

“What does this child’s brain need in order to engage?”

That’s a very different conversation.

Something working with young people keeps teaching me:

What happened to you matters.

It shapes you. It leaves marks. Sometimes it changes the way you see yourself, other people, and the world around you.

But there comes a point where another question becomes just as important:

How do I want to live now?

Not, “How do I pretend it didn’t happen?”

Not, “How do I become the person I was before?”

Instead, start asking yourself -

🌱Who do I want to be in spite of it?

🌱How do I want to treat people?

🌱How do I want to treat myself?

🌱What do I want to stand for?

🌱How do I want to show up when life is difficult?

I’ve been thinking about this alongside the Yamas and Niyamas in yoga philosophy. They are less about what happens to us and more about how we choose to move through the world: non-harming, truthfulness, integrity, contentment, self-discipline, self-reflection.

They ask us to consider not just what has happened to me? but how am I going to live?

I think there’s something incredibly powerful in teaching young people both.

Your story deserves to be witnessed. Your pain deserves compassion. And you are also allowed to become more than the things that happened to you.

Healing isn’t only about looking backwards.

I believe the turning point comes when you actively decide how you want to walk forwards. 👏❤️👏

Why equine-assisted therapy instead of sitting in a therapy room? 🐴

For some young people, particularly those who have experienced complex trauma or disrupted attachments, relationships with adults can be the very place they have learned they are not safe.

So sitting opposite another adult and being asked to talk about feelings can be incredibly difficult.

Equine-assisted therapy gives us another way in.

We don't have to start with “Tell me what happened.”

We can start with safety.

With being alongside one another.

With noticing the horses.

With boundaries, choice, communication and connection.

With experiencing what happens when you say no and the relationship survives.

When somebody sets a boundary and doesn't reject you.

When you move away and are still welcomed back.

When an adult remains calm, predictable and consistent.

For young people living with the effects of complex trauma, these seemingly small relational experiences can be incredibly important.

The horse isn't the therapist. And simply being around horses doesn't heal trauma.

My role as a psychotherapist specialising in complex trauma and attachment repair is to use the relationships developing between the young person, the horses and myself to help create new experiences of safety, trust, regulation and connection.

Sometimes therapy doesn't need to begin with talking.

Sometimes it begins with discovering that it might actually be safe to be in relationship with someone. 🐴

You can know a relationship needs to end and still grieve it.

You can leave the job you spent a decade building and still mourn the person you were inside it.

You can set a boundary and grieve the version of you who never needed one.

We assume that if a change is right, it shouldn’t hurt.
It does. And that doesn’t mean you got it wrong.

There’s a line from Rick Rubin I can’t stop thinking about. He talks about people who feel completely boxed in, convinced every door has closed. And he says: sometimes, something does need to die.
Not the person. The relationship. The career. The identity. The version of life you’ve been trying to keep alive long after it stopped working.

Because sometimes the feeling that something has to end gets confused with the belief that I have to end.
The unbearable thing becomes the person bearing it.

I’m a coach and psychotherapist, and there’s a distinction I come back to constantly:

I cannot continue living this way is not the same sentence as I cannot continue living.

In deep distress, that difference can become almost impossible to see.

So the question isn’t only “how do I cope with this?”
It’s also: what am I desperately trying to keep alive that has already reached its end?

Sometimes something really does need to die.
But it doesn’t have to be you.
