Created in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, oxytocin is the hormone that is released to give you that warm fuzzy feeling when you hug or kiss your loved ones or when you meet your baby for the first time.

Oxytocin also has some very important roles in labour and in the postnatal period as it is responsible for contracting the uterus and also promotes the let down reflex when you are breastfeeding.

Antenatal education plays an important role in your pregnancy, labour and childbirth experience as if you know what to expect during this time you won’t feel scared or anxious which can inhibit the production of oxytocin.

It’s a position you won’t naturally put yourself in.

Having an epidural does not mean you need to be on the bed on your back, the beds move into great positions to allow you to be on the bed but still upright! Ask your midwife and be proactive in keeping upright!

If you are planning on travelling during your pregnancy it is advised to speak to your midwife first

Flying is not harmful to you or your baby. some airlines won’t allow you to fly towards the end of your pregnancy and some require a ‘fit to fly’ letter from your midwife.

It’s really important to keep hydrated , mobilise up and down the plane and wear sexy decompression stockings as this will help reduce the risk of blood clots.

You might also want to choose your seat - an aisle seat may be easier to accommodate for you and your growing bump.
