Some helpful information from the Doddrige Centre Northampton for anyone struggling this summer holiday.

Here are our recommended summer reads for GCSE students and above.
Books should explore difficult moral dilemmas and explore views from different backgrounds.
This allows young adults to think critically and form their own opinions from a wide perspective.

It is great to allow young adults to form and express their own thoughts and feelings around these topics and when they are interested to engage in wider reading on the same topic, including non fiction and fiction from around the world.

This will help when looking at their texts for English Literature exams and is great practice for English Language exams too 😊

Here are our recommended summer reads for Key Stage 2 students. Reading at this age expands their knowledge about the world and their vocabulary. Plus it's a great way to reduce screen time.

Again discussing the book after helps with their understanding, critical thinking and fun. Feel free to use these questions to help start a conversation about their books:

-Which character would you like to be friends with and why?
-What would you have done differently to the main character?
-Why did the story happen that way?
-Do you think the narrator/ main character always told the truth/ understood what was happening?
-How do you think it would feel to be a part of this story and why?
-What did you learn from this story? What is the moral of the story?

Here is our recommended reads for Key Stage 1, at this age there are so many great books to choose from. The most important part is the conversations you have whilst they are reading.

Ask some of these questions to get them thinking more deeply, and to increase the fun:

-What do you think will happen next?
-What would you do if you were struggling like this character?
-What is this person feeling?
-How could you help this character?
-Was that a good choice to make?
-What did you like about the story?
