Sometimes students need extra support: perhaps to fill gaps in their knowledge, build confidence or support the work they are doing in school. Today's activity was taken from the page Howtostem. We made bubble wands in various shapes from pipe cleaners. Em was telling me the name of the shapes she made, the number of sides and vertices. We had a lot of discussion about whether the shape was a square or a rectangle? If I turn the square onto a vertex is it still a square? The 3d shapes were a little too hard for her to make so I did them and Em would predict the number if vertices, faces and edges before counting them.

Such wonderful Science questions were naturally generated. "Why is it the bubbles are in a triangle but when I blow it the bubble is round?" "Will bubbles always be round?"

Ball game idea number 2 for practising their times tables.

Similar to yesterdays but go outside.
Stand in a circle.
Throw the ball to each other.
Starting with the 3 times table. When you have tge ball you say the next multiple of 3 and then pass tge ball to someone else.

If someone drops the ball or gets the table wrong they have to run round the outside of circle while the rest of you pass the ball round to try and get it back to the starting position before the person gets there.

The game then starts again.

I'm often asked about how to make practising times tables more fun and I always suggest ball games.

All of you should sit round a table or on the floor with a big space between you. Start with 3s, when it gets to you say the next in the times table. Don't roll round in order everyone one should make random passes. When you get to 36 start on the 4s. If one person goes wrong or the ball is missed start again at the beginning. Don't allow hesitations either.

Have a go - you could also do it with the tables going backwards. Good luck

Yesterday's activity focused on fractions using a fraction wheel to find ways of making a whole and equivalent fractions. Fractions wheels are a great hands on activity that also appeals to the visual learner.

Today we worked on area by counting squares.

You will need
A dice
Colours
Square paper
More than 1 person

First draw a large rectangle on your square paper. This is your playing area.

Now take turns to roll the dice twice. The first roll is the width of your rectangle. The second is your length.

You can draw the rectangle anywhere in the playing area.

Now calculate the area by counting the squares. It did not take long for her to realise it was quicker to just multiply the length by width.

Keep taking turns to draw your rectangle.

The winner is the last person who is able to draw a rectangle on the playing area.

Perimeter Song 27/03/2020

For our fun maths activity today we found a maths song. We listened, we joined in and we danced. It really is quite a catchy tune. You could even make up your own maths song.
