Group Chats - Here’s What You Need to Know 📱

⭐️ Group chats exist on social media, messaging apps and online games and are one of the most popular ways young people communicate and engage with their peers.

⭐️ Whilst they can be helpful, they can often leave young people feeling excluded and bullied and lead to inappropriate content to be shared and viewed.

⭐️ As always reach out to the safeguarding team if you have any concerns - [email protected]

One of my favourite things about being an MP is welcoming students from our local schools to Parliament & hearing their views about current affairs & the 🇬🇧 political system.

This week it was a pleasure to meet with politics students & staff from Malcolm Arnold Academy.

Sometimes a simple conversation can make a big difference 💙

This weeks gives you the conversation starters to support your child with their mental health. Raising the subject can sometimes be hard but rather than keeping young people in the dark, confidently talking to young people about their mental health can help them feel comfortable to communicate their own worries and end any stigma before it begins

On Thursday 21st May we organised and hosted a roundtable event which included a professional steering group as well as young people from Malcolm Arnold Academy and other schools in the local area. The event was organised to enable us to listen properly to young people, understand what life feels like for young people and build practical solutions together. The discussion focused on Northampton’s strong communities and diversity, our pride in local identity, challenges linked to social media, online harm, mental health pressures, county lines, exploitation, misogyny, va**ng, knife crime anxiety and hate incidents. As well as exploring the overlap between online life and real-world safety.

When asked if social media makes life for teenagers hard? 13 agreed

When asked whether they agree that adults do not understand online pressure. 3 strongly agreed, 6 agreed

When asked whether they felt young people feel safe in Northampton. 8 young people strongly disagreed and the remaining said they disagreed

When asked if they feel young people are judged unfairly. 8 strongly agreed and 7 agreed

The next step will be for the steering group to meet again to discuss how we are going to action and support what the young people have voiced.

Vice Principal, Emily Phipp shared “the students from all the schools were so insightful and honest about their experiences of growing up in Northampton. They also reflected on the positives and negatives of social media and their perspectives of what they want the adults to know was really interesting. There was lots of valuable reflections for us to collate and think about the next steps”.

Thank you to everyone who came along and participated!
